One-stop shop for families seeking Catholic education
Chicago (Nov. 30, 2010) Saint Xavier University is partnering with local Catholic high schools to host a fair for elementary school children on Thurs., Dec. 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room at SXU's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.
The fair is a one-stop shop for families interested in Catholic education, intended to help guide middle school students and their families through the sometimes intimidating process of choosing the right high school. Families will be informed that Catholic schools are often an affordable option for a quality college preparatory education, thanks to the availability of scholarships and financial aid.
The following high schools will be represented at the fair: Trinity, Mother McAuley, St. Frances de Sales, Resurrection, Maria, Brother Rice, Queen of Peace, St. Ignatius, Marian Catholic, Marist, St. Laurence, Mt. Assisi, St. Rita, Mt. Carmel and De la Salle.
Parking is available free of charge at Lot #12 (across the street from the Warde Academic Center) and Lot #1 (in front of the Shannon Fitness Center). A map of SXU’s campus is available here.

SXU to host Fourth Annual Alumni and Friends Holiday Tea

Chicago (Nov. 30, 2010) The Saint Xavier University Office of Alumni and Parent Relations will host the Fourth Annual Alumni and Friends Holiday Tea at 1 p.m. on Tues., Dec. 14. in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.
Admission to the tea is $35 per person. A portion of the admission will be donated to support student scholarships.
The tea will have open seating and concludes at 4:30 p.m. Please R.S.V.P. by Fri., Dec. 10, as seating is limited.

Saint Xavier University’s No. 3 football team won its NAIA Championship Series quarterfinals game on Nov. 27. ABC 7 Chicago covered SXU’s 40-21 victory against University of St. Francis (Ind.). The 13-0 Cougars advance to the semifinals, where they face No. 2 Carroll College in Helena, Mont. at 1 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 4.

Sisters of Mercy of the Americas president to speak at SXU
Lecture to address challenges of faith and religion for adult believers
Chicago (Nov. 23, 2010) Sister Mary Waskowiak, President of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas will speak at Saint Xavier University for the Catholic Colloquium lecture series. Her lecture is titled “Sister Says: ‘Be Adult Catholics.’”
The lecture will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 1 at Saint Xavier University in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room, 3700 W. 103rd St. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Drawing on her commitment as a Sister of Mercy and her broad experience in Catholic Church ministries, Sister Waskowiak will address some of the challenges that religion and faith pose for all adult believers. How does one hold together faith in a transcendent God and membership in a less than perfect religious organization?
Sister Waskowiak has served as President of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas since July 2005. Prior to her role as president, Mary served as councilor on the Institute Leadership Team from 1991 to 1999 and as President of the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Burlingame, Calif., from 2003 to 2005.
Sister Waskowiak also served as President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) from 1996 to 1999, during which time she participated as official observer to the Bishops' Synod for the Americas at the Vatican. Her prior ministry experiences include secondary education, parish ministry, seminary field education, Sisters of Mercy vocation and formation ministry, and directing Mercy Center in Burlingame. Sister Waskowiak has served as facilitator and/or presenter for groups of women and men religious in Argentina, Chile, England, Guyana, Ireland, Peru, South Africa, the United States and Zambia.
The Catholic Colloquium series is sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Heritage. It honors the responsibilities of a Catholic university to its many constituents and illustrates how Catholic universities are resources for examining contemporary civic and social questions.

Liturgical design consultant to speak at SXU on Dec. 2
Chicago (Nov. 23, 2010) Liturgical design consultant J. Philip Horrigan, D. Min., will speak at Saint Xavier University's Theology South lecture series at 9:30 a.m. on Thurs., Dec. 2 at Saint Xavier in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room, 3700 W. 103rd St.
Horrigan's lecture, titled “Does It Matter Where We Pray?,” explores the importance of architecture for worship and includes a visual presentation focusing on the relationship between the space for liturgies and the action of liturgies. The lecture costs $6 and coffee will be served at 9 a.m.
From 1997 to 2009, Horrigan worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago as the Director of the Department of Art and Architecture at the Office for Divine Worship. Horrigan acted as a consultant and resource person for all the parishes involved in a building or renovation project.
