Illinois Supreme Court Justice and Special Olympics founder Anne M. Burke to speak at SXU

“Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession” on March 23

Chicago (March 10, 2010) Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke will deliver Saint Xavier University’s 11th Annual Honors Guest Lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., March 23 at the Butler Reception Room in the Chicago campus’ Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In her lecture titled “Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession,” Burke will discuss the dynamic and sometimes stressful relationship between her personal beliefs and the obligations and pressures inherent in her public roles. Her reflections will speak to all who seek a balance between faith and profession in their own lives.

Burke was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court in 2006 and was elected to a 10-year term in 2008. She previously was a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and was the first woman to serve as an Illinois Court of Claims judge. Gov. Jim Edgar appointed Burke as Special Counsel for Child Welfare Services and a member of the Legislative Committee on Juvenile Justice in 1994. Her work resulted in significant reforms that improved child protection services.

Burke’s professional and civic career has been committed to protecting the rights of those least able to defend themselves, including children and the physically and mentally challenged. She spearheaded the Special Olympics in Chicago and later became its director as it grew into the International Special Olympics. Burke also is a former SXU Board of Trustees member.

Burke served as Chair of the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for more than two years, investigating the causes and effects of the clergy abuse scandal and helping to establish guidelines and policies for effectively responding to this volatile issue.

The event is cosponsored by the Honors Program and the Center for Religion and Public Discourse. It is part of the Squeaky Weal lecture series, which promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on issues of public concern, with a focus on the religious, moral, and/or ethical implications of such issues for the common good.

The Honors Program provides an enriched academic experience to talented and highly motivated students, offering them stimulating Honors Seminars designed around themes of compelling interest and providing them with opportunities for applied internships and group and individual research under the direction of highly qualified faculty.

SXU hosts 12th Annual Job Fair on March 30

20 employers scheduled to attend fair

Chicago (March 10, 2010) Saint Xavier University invites the community to network with employers at its 12th Annual Job Fair from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30 at the Chicago campus’ Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The Job Fair is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring resumes and to dress professionally.

SXU Counseling and Career Services also will host two “How to Work a Job Fair” seminars, which are free and open to the public. The first session is at 3 p.m. on Fri., March 26 in the Student Lounge and the second is at noon on Mon., March 29 in the Mercy Ministry Center.

Free health screenings available at the SXU 7th Annual Health Fair

Open to public beginning at 8:30 a.m. on March 26

Chicago (March 8, 2010) Free health screenings, assessments and information are available at Saint Xavier University’s 7th Annual Health Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 26, at the Chicago campus Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd St. The fair is free and open to the public.

“It is important that people of all ages have the opportunity to learn how to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Jennifer Kjos Quinlan, event organizer and Shannon Center facility manager. “The SXU Health Fair is a one-stop shop to receive free health screenings, instructions, mini massages and much more provided by local vendors.”

The fair offers free screenings and testing services for blood pressure, prostate, hearing and vision screenings, foot screenings, cervical spine screenings, blood glucose screenings, bone density, injury assessments, postural assessment, shoe assessments and more. Other free services include reflexology and mini chair massages. Nutrition, heath, and wellness information is available, as well as healthy cooking demonstrations and 30-minute nutrition and diabetes presentations.

Representatives from SXU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Ludden Speech and Language Clinic, Health Center, School of Nursing, and the Shannon Center will be present at the fair. Participants can purchase health and fitness-related books for 40 percent off from the SXU Bookstore.

Light refreshments will be available from Panera Bread, Great American Bagel, Starbucks, and TCF Bank. Parents can enjoy a children's activity corner with bean bags and activities sponsored by The Little Gym.

Blogger to travel with Women's basketball team on the road to 2010 NAIA National Championship

CHICAGO - The No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team will have an extra member in its entourage when it makes the trip to Jackson, Tenn., for the upcoming 2010 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship, which begins on Wed., March 17.

Brett Roseman, a SouthtownStar staff photographer, will travel with the Cougars on their championship run and give fans an exclusive "behind the scenes" look at the trip in his "Rolling With the Cougars" blog. The interactive site will provide SXU fans with pictures from various stages of the trip as well as the opportunity to post comments and messages for the team. Roseman already began posting blogs about his experiences over the last few days during the Cougars' CCAC Tournament run.

SouthtownStar reporters Elisabeth Martin and Tim Cronin also will cover the team in different capacities. Martin is putting together a special interest piece to help SouthtownStar readers get to know individual players on Saint Xavier’s roster on a more personal level, while Cronin will write game-by-game happenings from the National Tournament. ComEd Chairman/CEO Frank M. Clark to receive Shield of Saint Xavier at SXU’s 25th Annual President’s Scholarship Ball

President-designate Christine M. Wiseman, J.D., to host reception

Chicago (March 8, 2010) Frank M. Clark, chairman and chief executive officer of ComEd, will receive the Shield of Saint Xavier at the 25th Annual President’s Scholarship ball on Sat., March 20, 2010 at the Chicago Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Ave.

“The Shield of Saint Xavier is our University’s highest honor. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and service to the greater Chicago community, particularly to the city’s Catholic institutions,” said Interim President and Provost Angela Durante, Ph.D. “Mr. Clark’s leadership roles at ComEd and Exelon and his long history of civic involvement exemplify the ideals of Saint Francis Xavier, Mother Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy.”

The President’s Scholarship Ball has raised millions of dollars for the President’s Scholarship Program, which provides financial support to Saint Xavier’s most deserving students. The black-tie event is open to the public and President-Designate Christine M. Wiseman, J.D., will host a reception from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Online registration is now open.

As head of ComEd, Clark oversees one of the largest electrical utilities in the U.S. A subsidiary of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation, ComEd serves 3.8 million residential and business customers in northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state’s population.

Clark previously served as president of ComEd and was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company. He also was executive vice president and chief of staff of Exelon. Since joining ComEd in 1966, Clark rose steadily through the ranks, holding various positions in both corporate support and line functions. During his 43-year career at ComEd, he held key leadership positions at a number of business-critical functions across the company, including customer service operations; marketing and sales; regulatory, governmental and community affairs; information technology; communications; human resources; labor relations; and distribution services.

Clark serves on the board of trustees of the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, DePaul University, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the University of Chicago Medical Center; the board of directors of Metropolitan Family Services, Illinois Manufacturers Association, Big Shoulders Fund, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, Waste Management, Inc., Harris Financial Corp. and Aetna Inc.; and the executive committee of The Chicago Community Trust. He sits on the governing board of the Illinois Council on Economic Education and is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the Economic Club of Chicago, The Commercial Club of Chicago, and the Executives’ Club of Chicago. Clark is a co-founder of the Rowe-Clark Math & Science Academy on Chicago's west side.

Clark received his bachelor’s and law degrees from DePaul University.

Chicago Police Department Supt. Jody Weis said the summit aimed to provide law enforcement agencies with new strategies to address the citys 75,000-plus gang members and provide networking opportunities and interdepartmental coordination.
