Illinois Supreme Court Justice and Special Olympics founder Anne M. Burke to speak at SXU

“Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession” on March 23

Chicago (March 10, 2010) Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke will deliver Saint Xavier University’s 11th Annual Honors Guest Lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., March 23 at the Butler Reception Room in the Chicago campus’ Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In her lecture titled “Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession,” Burke will discuss the dynamic and sometimes stressful relationship between her personal beliefs and the obligations and pressures inherent in her public roles. Her reflections will speak to all who seek a balance between faith and profession in their own lives.

Burke was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court in 2006 and was elected to a 10-year term in 2008. She previously was a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and was the first woman to serve as an Illinois Court of Claims judge. Gov. Jim Edgar appointed Burke as Special Counsel for Child Welfare Services and a member of the Legislative Committee on Juvenile Justice in 1994. Her work resulted in significant reforms that improved child protection services.

Burke’s professional and civic career has been committed to protecting the rights of those least able to defend themselves, including children and the physically and mentally challenged. She spearheaded the Special Olympics in Chicago and later became its director as it grew into the International Special Olympics. Burke also is a former SXU Board of Trustees member.

Burke served as Chair of the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for more than two years, investigating the causes and effects of the clergy abuse scandal and helping to establish guidelines and policies for effectively responding to this volatile issue.

The event is cosponsored by the Honors Program and the Center for Religion and Public Discourse. It is part of the Squeaky Weal lecture series, which promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on issues of public concern, with a focus on the religious, moral, and/or ethical implications of such issues for the common good.

The Honors Program provides an enriched academic experience to talented and highly motivated students, offering them stimulating Honors Seminars designed around themes of compelling interest and providing them with opportunities for applied internships and group and individual research under the direction of highly qualified faculty.

More than 500 regional law enforcement officials from 80 agencies meet for Chicago Metropolitan Gang Summit at SXU

Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis stressed need for new strategies, interdepartmental networking

(L to R) Saint Xavier University Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Paul Kolessar, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis and Saint Xavier University Interim President and Provost Angela Durante, Ph.D., at the Chicago Metropolitan Gang Summit at SXU.

Chicago (March 3, 2010) More than 500 regional law enforcement officials met to discuss the latest tactics in dealing with gangs, guns and drugs today at the Chicago Metropolitan Gang Summit at Saint Xavier University.

Chicago Police Department Supt. Jody Weis said the summit aimed to provide law enforcement agencies with new strategies to address the city’s 75,000-plus gang members and provide networking opportunities and interdepartmental coordination.

“If we keep doing the same thing, bad guys get wise to it,” Weis said. “We have to look at different ways to do things based on what our adversaries are doing.”

Presenters included representatives from the Chicago Police, the DEA, the Cook County Department of Corrections, the Illinois Department of Corrections, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the States Attorney’s Office. They spoke to members of more than 80 area law enforcement agencies about gangs in Chicago and surrounding suburbs, new laws and federal charging, intelligence sharing, narcotics operations, and gangs in correctional institutions.

Commander Leo Schmitz of the Chicago Police Gang Enforcement Unit stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies networking and sharing intelligence, as gang members are more likely to travel across the region than in the past.

“My problem today is his problem next week,” Schmitz said.

Berwyn Police Chief William Kushner said law enforcement working together can make a significant impact on gang life.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for over 30 years and this is the first time we’ve had something like this,” he said.

Saint Xavier University Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Paul Kolessar said the Summit was an excellent opportunity for law enforcement agencies to combine their resources.

“It provides a venue for sharing critical information that affects every jurisdiction,” he said.

The Chicago Metropolitan Gang Summit was presented by Saint Xavier University, the Chicago Police Department and the Berwyn Police Department.

SXU Receives Presidential Community Service Award

Named to 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Chicago (March 2, 2010) Saint Xavier University was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 700 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. On campuses across the country, thousands of students joined their faculty to develop innovative programs and projects to meet local needs using the skills gained in their classrooms. Business students served as consultants to budget-strapped nonprofits and businesses, law students volunteered at legal clinics, and dozens of others organized anti-hunger campaigns.

“Congratulations to Saint Xavier University and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Our nation’s students are a critical part of the equation and vital to our efforts to tackle the most persistent challenges we face. They have achieved impactful results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service.”

The Honor Roll includes six colleges and universities recognized as Presidential Awardees, with an additional 115 named to the Distinction List and 621 schools named as Honor Roll members. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses. Read the full list of Honor Roll recipients.

“The Saint Xavier community is grateful for this national honor, proud of our public-spirited students and pleased to partner with President Barack Obama in his national call to service initiative,” said Interim President and Provost Angela Durante, Ph.D. “The Sisters of Mercy, the founders of our 163 year-old University, are renowned for their ‘mercy spirit tradition’ and this federal recognition proves their legacy is alive and well today.”

The important community service volunteer efforts of Saint Xavier students covers thousands of hours of work in various areas of need, including: at-risk youth, dropout prevention, English as a second language, homelessness, mentoring, tutoring, youth development, senior citizen services, special needs support for the disabled, service trips to build houses for needy people in foreign lands such as Belize and more.

College students make a significant contribution to the volunteer sector; in 2009, 3.16 million students performed more than 300 million hours of service, according to the Volunteering in America study released by the Corporation. Each year, the Corporation invests more than $150 million in fostering a culture of service on college campuses through grants awarded by its programs; the education awards that AmeriCorps members receive at the conclusion of their term of service to pay for college; and through support of training, research, recognition, and other initiatives to spur college service.

The Corporation oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
