Four more opportunities to save on discounted sportswear
Chicago (Sept. 27, 2010) The "Touchdown Tuesdays" promotion is underway at Saint Xavier University's Campus Bookstore, in the Shannon Center on the Chicago campus at 3700 W. 103rd St. Every SXU Cougar touchdown in a home game this season triggers a five percent discount on sportswear up to 30 percent on the Tuesday following that game, no coupons or tickets required, limit of one item per visit. Campus Bookstore hours on Tuesdays are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The nationally ranked (#4) high-flying Cougar offense bodes well for bargain shoppers. The first two Cougar football home games yielded seven and eight touchdowns respectively, resulting in 30 percent discounts on the following Tuesdays at the Campus Bookstore. For Cougar football fans, SXU supporters and bargain hunters throughout the city and suburbs, "Touchdown Tuesdays" is a good deal, and a fine time to buy sportswear at the SXU Campus Bookstore while supplies last.
"We had to set a 30 percent limit because our Cougar team is so good," said Campus Bookstore Manager Donna Gasior. "Otherwise we'd be giving sportswear away free!"
Additional good news, according to Gasior, is that if Cougar Football qualifies for postseason play, "Touchdown Tuesdays" will advance along with the team, following any home games that might be scheduled in November and December.

Sept. 2/4 SXU defeats University of St. Francis (Ill.) 52 – 21 (seven touchdowns-delayed by weather-completed 9/4/10))

Oct. 30 SXU vs. Walsh University 6 p.m. (Touchdown Tuesday is Nov. 2)
Nov. 6 SXU vs. University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 1 p.m. (Touchdown Tuesday is Nov. 9)
Tickets for Cougar home football games are free to Saint Xavier students, upon presenting a valid Cougar Card, and $5 (adults) $3 (children 12 and under) to the general public. Plenty of seating is available.

SXU student group receives national honor
SXU chapter of National Society of Collegiate receives Bronze STAR status
Chicago (Sept. 24, 2010) Saint Xavier University's chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars was awarded Bronze STAR Status at the 2010 NSCS Leadership Summit.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first- and second-year college students. NSCS has more than 750,000 members and more than 270 chapters.
STAR status is determined by chapter program success, community service, member engagement and on-campus involvement. The Bronze STAR award was given to only 40 other chapters this year.
SXU members worked diligently to execute and improve long-standing NSCS programs such as PACE (Planning to Achieve Collegiate Excellence), a mentoring program for middle and high school students, and I Stand for Integrity Week, a week dedicated to supporting the Society's integrity initiative.

SXU receives more than $410,000 in federal grants for nursing equipment
Funding will support undergraduate nursing education, technology and distance education equipment for graduates
Chicago (Sept. 22, 2010) Saint Xavier University's School of Nursing recently received $411,519 in federal grant money for new educational equipment through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
A $246,489 grant will support technology and distance education equipment for graduate nursing programs. Requested equipment includes videoconferencing equipment, a video server, a smart classroom, presentation equipment for two classrooms, SMART board interactive white boards and the addition of equipment for wireless capability throughout the School of Nursing wing.
A $165,030 grant will support nursing lab equipment, primarily for undergraduate education. Requested equipment includes a critical care bed, a ventilator, a crash cart package, a Demodose Meddispense System, a Radiant Warmer and Crib, a SimMan G, a Sim Newborn Advanced and an A/V system for the simulation lab.
“This generous grant will help Saint Xavier University better train and educate our students using cutting edge technology to prepare them for the challenges of nursing in the modern era,” said School of Nursing Dean Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D.
"All equipment purchased under the two grants will be funded in full with Federal American Recover and Reinvestment Act grant dollars provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Equipment to Enhance Training for Health Professionals initiative. HRSA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services."

More than 200 people celebrate SXU School of Nursing's 75th Anniversary
Home to first integrated baccalaureate nursing program in Illinois
Chicago (Sept. 15, 2010) More than 200 people from across the country celebrated Saint Xavier University’s School of Nursing's 75th Anniversary with a series of commemorative events on Sept. 11.
Monsignor Kenneth Velo celebrated a special Mass in McDonough Chapel at the University's Chicago campus. Velo is an Archdiocese of Chicago priest, Senior Executive of Catholic Collaboration at DePaul University and President of the Big Shoulders Fund.
Suzanne Gordon, an award-winning journalist, author, lecturer and patient advocate, delivered a guest lecture advocating for the profession of nursing. Attendees took tours of the Chicago campus and then traveled to Beverly Country Club for a reception and dinner. Part of the entertainment included a show of nursing uniforms throughout history. Proceeds from the event will fund nursing student scholarships.
“The Sisters of Mercy collaboration 75 years ago between Mercy Hospital and Saint Xavier has had a deep and lasting impact on Chicago, on Illinois and nationwide,” said School of Nursing Dean Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D.
“I congratulate the School of Nursing on its 75th anniversary,” said Saint Xavier President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D. “The work of this exemplary school has become a lasting testament to the Mercy spirit, which also led to the founding of our University in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy.”
Saint Xavier and Mercy Hospital, both founded by the Sisters of Mercy, joined forces in 1935 to create the first integrated baccalaureate nursing program in Illinois. Today, 75 years later the SON remains strongly committed to linking innovation and concern for community, to providing basic and advanced nursing education programs, outreach programs, and to providing clinical services to surrounding communities.
