Emmy Award-winning playwright and author John R. Powers to speak at SXU

Mount Greenwood native wrote “The Last Catholic in America” and “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?”

Chicago (April 15, 2010) Two-time Emmy Award-winning playwright, author and Mount Greenwood native John R. Powers will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., April 29 in McGuire Hall in the Warde Academic Center at Saint Xavier University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The lecture is open to the public. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Powers will reflect on his experiences growing up in the Far Southwest Side neighborhood’s school system, the values he gained and how they impacted the world of the 21st Century.

Powers is the author of four books. He is well-known locally for writing about his early memories of growing up in Mount Greenwood in his first two best-sellers, “The Last Catholic in America” and “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?” He has appeared on more than one hundred radio and TV shows, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Today Show,” and has performed the one-man shows “Going Home” and “Life Isn’t Fair.”

Powers holds a doctorate degree in communications from Northwestern University and has taught speech and performing arts at Northeastern Illinois University.
