SXU’s class of ’61 alumnae celebrate 50th reunion

Golden Graduate Society inductees to commission painting for newly renovated Stump Library

Chicago (May 20, 2011) Almost 50 alumnae of Saint Xavier University’s class of 1961 celebrated their 50 year reunion during Commencement Weekend, May 14 and 15.

The weekend’s activities included a tour of the Chicago campus and a 50 Year Commencement Celebration culminating with the Class of 1961’s induction into the Golden Graduate Society, which honors those who graduated at least 50 years ago.

The 1961 alumnae will donate funds to commission a painting embodying the quotation “Who shall find a valiant woman?” for the newly renovated Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library. This phrase adorned the main entrance of the University (then known as Saint Xavier College) during the 1950s and 60s.

Funds raised in excess of the final cost of the artwork will be donated to the Student Relief Fund, which provides grants of up to $500 to help students who have exhausted other financial aid options pay for tuition, course fees or textbooks. The fund also assists students in good standing who otherwise might have to withdraw from the University and put their dream of earning a college degree on hold.
