Best-selling author Jonathan Eig to present the true story of Al Capone at SXU
"The Scapegoating of Al Capone" will be followed by screening of 1932 classic film "Scarface" on Feb. 14
Chicago (Jan. 27, 2011) New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Eig will present the story of Al Capone as you've never heard it before on the 82nd anniversary of the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Eig's lecture, titled "The Scapegoating of Al Capone," is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 14 at Saint Xavier University's Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library, located in the Warde Academic Center of SXU's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. A screening of the 1932 classic “Scarface” will be held from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. after the lecture.
Eig, author of "Get Capone," will tell the true story of the rise and fall of Capone based on newly discovered government documents and the notorious gangster's personal letters. Eig will explain why Capone had nothing to do with the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and tell how Eliot Ness and the Untouchables got all the credit for taking down Capone while the real heroes of the story got no publicity. He'll also argue that the plot to capture Capone came directly from the White House, where President Herbert Hoover was growing increasingly anxious that Capone was going to slip away.
Immediately after Eig's talk, the Library will screen "Scarface," widely regarded as the best of the early gangster films. Produced by Howard Hughes, directed by Howard Hawks, and staring Paul Muni, it tells of the rise and fall of a mobster modeled on Al Capone. The film was banned by the Hays Production Code for violence, and was released only after Hughes agreed to a number of edits, including a new ending.
Eig has authored three books- "Get Capone," "Opening Day: The Story of Jackie Robinson's First Season," and "Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig." He also writes a monthly sports column in "Chicago" magazine, and has appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, NPR, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Sheriff Tom Dart to speak at Saint Xavier University on Feb. 9
Former prosecutor shares his unique perspective on justice in society
Chicago (Jan. 24, 2011) Join us on Thurs., Feb. 9 as Sheriff Tom Dart speaks at Saint Xavier University (SXU) about “Justice: Through the Eyes of the Sheriff.” The talk will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Butler Reception Room, located in the Warde Academic Center at SXU's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. Dart will also meet with SXU students for a discussion as well as question and answer session prior to the lecture.
Through his innovative approach to law enforcement, Dart continues to fight for the rights of others and works to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. He oversees the second largest single-site jail in the country and monitors the operations of both the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department and the Court Services Department.
As a former prosecutor and state legislator, he helped initiate a massive public corruption investigation in the poverty-stricken village of Ford Heights, which led to the indictments of multiple police officers. As a state legislator, Dart sponsored hundreds of bills that demanded accountability from state officials.
He also re-wrote child welfare bills as well as wrote the state’s Sexually Violent Predators Commitment Act, which led to the state’s first-ever study connecting homelessness and prostitution. His work dramatically changed the way sheriff’s police handle arrests in prostitution cases because prostitutes are now steered toward rehabilitative services instead of jail. Additionally, they are doing more to go after the men who pimp these women and buy their services. The Internet sex crimes unit was also founded under Dart and pursues child pornography and human trafficking cases, providing the foundation for his federal lawsuit against the website Craigslist, which ultimately led to the removal of the Adult Services section from the website. He oversaw the investigation of Burr Oak Cemetery, in which workers allegedly dug up more than 200 graves, dumped the bodies into unmarked mass graves, and resold the burial plots. Lastly, Dart created the county’s first animal crimes unit that works diligently to stop the spread of dogfighting and animal cruelty.
In 2009, Time magazine named Sheriff Dart one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world thanks to his groundbreaking efforts.
This lecture is part of the annual Squeaky Weal Lecture Series, which aims to provide thoughtful discussions of public issues with a focus on their ethical dimensions and their impact on the common good. It is sponsored by SXU’s Center for Religion and Public Discourse. For more information, contact Kathy Mareska at mareska@sxu.edu.

Additionally, SXU established the Vernon O. Crawley Scholarship for Moraine Valley students. This scholarship will provide $12,000 annual awards to eight Moraine Valley students who have earned their associate degree.
“I am delighted and humbled by the establishment of this scholarship as well as deeply pleased to offer Moraine Valley students an opportunity to further their educational goals at an outstanding institution,” said Dr. Vernon O. Saint Xavier University Hosts Special Assembly for NAIA Championship Football Team
Local and State Legislators Join Historic Celebration
Chicago (Jan. 12, 2011) State Senator Ed Maloney, Alderman Matt O’Shea, and state Representatives Kelly Burke and Bill Cunningham will join SXU President Christine Wiseman at a historic special assembly hosted by the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 3:30 p.m. This special assembly in the Shannon Center, 3700 West 103rd Street, will honor the remarkable achievements of our winning football team that captured the 2011 NAIA National Championship last month with its 24/20 victory over six-time national champion Carroll College of Montana. This is the first time since 1913 that a Chicago school has won a national football championship, and it’s the first time in our 41-year history of Saint Xavier University Athletics that we have garnered a national championship. Additionally, this is also the first time a college football team from the state of Illinois has won a national championship since Augustana College won its last one of four straight national titles in 1986.
“It is going to be one of the greatest afternoons in the history of SXU Athletics,” said Saint Xavier University Athletic Director Bob Hallberg. “We anticipate a large turnout from the community as well as University faculty, staff, and especially students as we celebrate this historic experience.”
The SXU Football team finished up its historic campaign with a 14-1 overall record and the NAIA’s No. 1 ranking in the 2011 NAIA Football Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll. The Cougars also held the No. 1 ranking for eight weeks (Sept. 12 to Oct. 31) during the regular season marking the first time a SXU varsity team has received the top spot in school history.
“We are so proud of the historic accomplishments of our football team winning the first-ever national championship during our first-ever title appearance,” said John Pelrine, V.P. of Student Affairs for SXU. “Our football players are outstanding athletes who worked hard as a team to secure this championship and work equally as hard individually to reach their goals as SXU students.”
