SXU volunteers pack more than 300 lunches for needy people at area shelters

Service Through Action Team has donated more than 1,000 lunches since December, 2009

Chicago (April 30, 2010) More than 30 Saint Xavier University students, alumni, staff and faculty members worked together to pack more than 300 lunches for needy people at South Side shelters last night at the University.

Service Through Action Team (S.T.A.T.) members prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, juice boxes, chips and candy for people at Pro Labore Dei, Port Ministries, the P.R.I.D.E. school lunch program in Oak Lawn and the Oak Lawn PADS shelter.

S.T.A.T. has donated more than 1,000 lunches since its inception in December, 2009 and will continue its Brown Bag project next semester. S.T.A.T.’s next project is the Alumni Mercy Garden, in which members plant, maintain and harvest fresh vegetables to donate to local pantries and shelters.

SXU students, alumni make over 350 brown bag lunches for local shelters

SXU’s Service Through Action Team planning other service projects for 2010


Chicago (Dec. 4, 2009) Saint Xavier University students and alumni volunteered their time to pack over 350 lunches for people at local shelters last night at the University.

The 30-plus volunteers were part of the recently formed Service Through Action Team (S.T.A.T.) – Alumni and Students Working Together. The group collected more than $800 in donated products to make the brown bag lunches, which included peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, juice boxes, chips, fruit snacks/roll-ups and pieces of fruit.

The lunches were delivered to the following shelters: Oak Lawn PADS, REST Shelter, Southwest Chicago PADS, Chicago Temple United Methodist Church and Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry.

“We would like to thank the Saint Xavier community for volunteering their time during the holiday season to aid others in need, as well as local businesses, including Ultra Foods in Chicago and Dominick’s in Merrionette Park, for their generous donations,” said SXU Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Jamie Manahan.

The next S.T.A.T. brown bag service project is scheduled for Feb. 25, 2010.
