SXU hosts 2010 Harvest Literacy Conference on Oct. 13 at Orland Park Campus

Daylong event for teachers, professionals and parents who play role in promoting literacy

Chicago (Sept. 14, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s School of Education will host the 2010 Harvest Literacy Conference, a daylong event for teachers, professionals and parents who play an important role promoting literacy, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 13 at the Orland Park campus, 18230 Orland Parkway.

Laurie Elish-Piper, Ph.D, Presidential Teaching Professor in Literacy Education and Director of the Literacy Clinic at Northern Illinois University, will deliver the keynote address, titled "Parents as Partners in Literacy." Elish-Piper also is a columnist for the Illinois Reading Council Journal and is president of the College Reading Association. She has received the Northern Illinois University Award for Exceptional Contributions to Teaching, College of Education in 2005, the Northern Illinois University Award for Exceptional Contributions for Partnership Activity in 2003, and has authored books and research articles.

Other speakers will focus on topics in reading with practical suggestions for the classroom teacher, including; response to intervention, content area reading, 21st century literacy (blogs, wikis and nings), writing, comprehension strategies, assessment, cultural awareness in literacy, children's literature on bullying, various reading strategies and poetry.

Attendees can meet author Tom Lichtenheld and explore how to use humorous books in the classroom to promote literacy. Additionally this year, new and gently used children's books will be accepted for Rock for Reading and donated to local schools.

Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be no on-site or phone registration allowed. Early bird registration costs $125 and must be completed by Fri., Sept. 24. Registration afterwards costs $140 and must be received by Fri., Oct. 8. The registration fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, and instruction and workshop materials. This year's keynote address will be streamed into additional rooms for the comfort of all attendees.
