SXU to host “Mini Musicals 2012: North Shore Rhythms and Blues”
Free performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Mon., July 23
Chicago (July 13, 2012) Midwest New Musicals and Light Opera Works will present “Mini Musicals 2012: North Shore Rhythms and Blues” from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mon., July 23 in McGuire Hall, located in the Warde Academic Center at Saint Xavier University’s Chicago campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
Participating authors create short musicals for a pre-selected ensemble and production team. In addition to the theme of “North Shore Rhythms and Blues,” authors had to include the following in their pieces: the lyric image “a loaf of stale bread”; the line of dialogue “there’s a panda in the driveway”; and the musical motive C up to F# up to G down to E.
The performance includes a concert medley of songs by workshop writers, as well as: “Paddycakes” by Patrice Peltier and Johanna Drew; “The Blood of San Gennaro” by SXU Executive Director for University Ministry Graziano Marcheschi, John David Nelson and Jessica A. Hunt; and “Rhythm and Wine” by Barbara Georgans and Bruce Warden.
Midwest New Musicals is an ongoing forum where lyricists, composers and book writers create and discuss their work. It is a branch of Light Opera Works, Chicago’s specialists in operetta and musical theater. This program is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, The ASCAP Foundation and The Dramatist Guild Fund and individual donors.
