Mercy Hospital and Medical Center President/CEO to speak about health care at SXU

Sr. Sheila Lyne, R.S.M., will deliver “Healthcare in the Mercy Tradition” lecture and conversation on March 11

Chicago (Feb. 26, 2010) Sr. Sheila Lyne, R.S.M., president and chief executive officer of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, will speak about health care and the Mercy tradition at Saint Xavier University’s Sister Josetta Butler Lecture at 7 p.m. March 11 in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Sr. Lyne’s lecture, “Healthcare in the Mercy Tradition,” is free and open to the public, and includes a question and answer session at the end of the lecture.

Sr. Lyne has been Mercy Hospital’s president and CEO since 2000, and previously from 1976 until 1990. She has focused on developing and expanding Mercy services to meet the needs of the surrounding communities. Sr. Lyne previously served as Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from Saint Xavier College, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Chicago.
Active in both health organizations and higher education, Sr. Sheila Lyne was the recipient of the SXU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

Named for Sister Mary Josetta Butler, R.S.M., the Sr. Josetta Butler Lecture is held every two years at Saint Xavier. Sr. Butler was Dean of Saint Xavier College from 1941 to 1963 and President of from 1960 to 1963. Her significant contributions as a Sister of Mercy, a college administrator, and an innovative educator have had a lasting influence on Saint Xavier, and the Board of Trustees in 1990 established a fund endowing the lecture series and an annual student scholarship.

SXU Backs the Bid, gathers for historic 2016 Olympics announcement at Chicago campus

Community to watch International Olympic Committee coverage in Figaro’s in Regina Hall

Chicago (Oct. 1, 2009) Saint Xavier University community members will gather to watch the International Olympic Committee’s historic announcement on whether Chicago will host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Friday, Oct. 2 , at Figaro’s in Regina Hall at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The IOC voting and city selection begin at 9 a.m. and the announcement of the winning city is expected to take place between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Saint Xavier supports Chicago’s bid for hosting the 2016 games, and the Chicago 2016 Olympic Committee will provide a limited number of t-shirts and giveaways.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley honors SXU for environmental sustainability efforts

City resolution commends University, President Dwyer for “serious and significant commitment” to green building

Chicago (Sept. 9, 2009) Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the city council honored Saint Xavier University and its president, Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., with a resolution commending the University’s efforts toward environmental sustainability during a ceremony today at Chicago City Hall.

The resolution congratulates the University for its “serious and significant commitment to the principle that higher education must be at the forefront of sustainable, ‘green’ building practices,” and outlines several of Saint Xavier’s sustainability accomplishments, including:

• Saint Xavier being the first University in Illinois to have two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certified buildings, and one of only 11 universities in the country to accomplish this feat.
• The GreenBike Share program, which allows University community members to borrow bikes from docking stations across the Chicago campus.
• Saint Xavier being the first higher education institution in Chicago to sign the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, a pledge by more than 650 colleges and universities across the nation to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and become climate neutral.

“On behalf of the Saint Xavier Community, I wish to thank Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the City Council for this honor,” said Dwyer. “We are proud to see Saint Xavier’s sustainability efforts recognized by the City of Chicago under the leadership of Mayor Daley, who is clearly one of our nation’s foremost leaders in sustainability initiatives.”

Mary Schmich speaks at Saint Xavier University's Squeaky Weal Lecture

Chicago Tribune columnist delights at Saint Xavier University

Chicago (April 2, 2009) Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich delighted a full Butler Reception Room at Saint Xavier University on Tuesday, March 31, when she delivered her lecture, “Adapt or Die: Surviving Change in the New Millennium.”

Schmich drew laughter and, just as often, sounds of commiseration as she described traditional print journalism’s struggle to adapt to Web-based competitors. Drawing equally on her time as a journalist going back to the days of President Carter and her 15 years of yoga, Schmich explained her belief that some things must be let go in order to adapt. She answered questions from the audience ranging from the current climate at the Chicago Tribune, which recently declared bankruptcy, to her own spirituality.

“Ms. Schmich’s insights into the nature and challenges of change in all aspects of our lives were so real, so familiar,” said Sister Joy Clough, R.S.M., coordinator of the Squeaky Weal Lecture Series. “So often listeners recognized themselves in her reflections, and those present were very pleased with the honesty, wit, and wisdom of her presentation.”

Saint Xavier’s Squeaky Weal lecture series explores issues of public concern with an emphasis on their religious, moral or ethical implications for the common good. The series is sponsored by the Center for Religion and Public Discourse.
