SXU awarded U.S. Department of Education Grant

$301,690 under Student Support Services Program

Chicago (August 10, 2010) On August 9^th Saint Xavier University was notified by the Office of Senator Dick Durbin in Washington D.C. that the University has been selected by the United States Department of Education to receive continued federal funding to support the Student Success Program (SSP). The grant will be extended in the amount of $301,690 for the period September 1, 2010 through August 31, 2011. It is anticipated that the grant will be 5 years in duration.

Saint Xavier has been selected to receive this funding under the Student Support Services Program, a federal TRIO grant program administered through the DOE. The University SSP is intended to increase the graduation rates of students by enhancing academic support, connection to concerned staff, individualized counseling, and other activities designed to augment student academic skills. SSP is currently funded to serve 204 students.

“This federal funding makes possible the continuation of vital services to many SXU students who really need them the most,” said Saint Xavier President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D.

Saint Xavier SSP students must be first generation (neither parent has achieved a bachelor’s degree), low-income, or affected by disabilities. SSP is not a remedial program; it is a retention program enabling Saint Xavier staff to promote academic progress by working as a team. SSP services to students include: academic & personal development workshops, service and leadership opportunities, academic monitoring, peer mentoring, and special events. SSP has been serving students at SXU since 1993.

More than 850 students receiving diplomas

Chicago (May 17, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s new president Christine M. Wiseman, J.D. presided over the University’s 2010 Spring Commencement on May 16 at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103^rd St. More than 850 students received their diplomas.

“I congratulate our Saint Xavier graduates who have worked so diligently and successfully to reach this milestone in their lives,” said Wiseman.

The Rev. Michael M. Boland, administrator, president and CEO of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and 1982 Saint Xavier alumnus, gave the Undergraduate Commencement speech. Jeanette Rodriguez, Ph.D, chair of Theology and Religious Studies at Seattle University, delivered the Graduate Commencement speech.

Boland, Rodriguez and 1974 Saint Xavier alumnus Larry R. Rogers, Sr. received honorary degrees. Rogers is a partner at Power, Rogers and Smith, P.C. and previously was president of the Cook County Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice and Special Olympics founder Anne M. Burke to speak at SXU

“Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession” on March 23

Chicago (March 10, 2010) Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke will deliver Saint Xavier University’s 11th Annual Honors Guest Lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., March 23 at the Butler Reception Room in the Chicago campus’ Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In her lecture titled “Public Servant/Private Catholic: A Jurist Reflects on Faith and Profession,” Burke will discuss the dynamic and sometimes stressful relationship between her personal beliefs and the obligations and pressures inherent in her public roles. Her reflections will speak to all who seek a balance between faith and profession in their own lives.

Burke was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court in 2006 and was elected to a 10-year term in 2008. She previously was a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and was the first woman to serve as an Illinois Court of Claims judge. Gov. Jim Edgar appointed Burke as Special Counsel for Child Welfare Services and a member of the Legislative Committee on Juvenile Justice in 1994. Her work resulted in significant reforms that improved child protection services.

Burke’s professional and civic career has been committed to protecting the rights of those least able to defend themselves, including children and the physically and mentally challenged. She spearheaded the Special Olympics in Chicago and later became its director as it grew into the International Special Olympics. Burke also is a former SXU Board of Trustees member.

Burke served as Chair of the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for more than two years, investigating the causes and effects of the clergy abuse scandal and helping to establish guidelines and policies for effectively responding to this volatile issue.

The event is cosponsored by the Honors Program and the Center for Religion and Public Discourse. It is part of the Squeaky Weal lecture series, which promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on issues of public concern, with a focus on the religious, moral, and/or ethical implications of such issues for the common good.

The Honors Program provides an enriched academic experience to talented and highly motivated students, offering them stimulating Honors Seminars designed around themes of compelling interest and providing them with opportunities for applied internships and group and individual research under the direction of highly qualified faculty.

SXU hosts 12th Annual Job Fair on March 30

20 employers scheduled to attend fair

Chicago (March 10, 2010) Saint Xavier University invites the community to network with employers at its 12th Annual Job Fair from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30 at the Chicago campus’ Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The Job Fair is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring resumes and to dress professionally.

SXU Counseling and Career Services also will host two “How to Work a Job Fair” seminars, which are free and open to the public. The first session is at 3 p.m. on Fri., March 26 in the Student Lounge and the second is at noon on Mon., March 29 in the Mercy Ministry Center.

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center President/CEO to speak about health care at SXU

Sr. Sheila Lyne, R.S.M., will deliver “Healthcare in the Mercy Tradition” lecture and conversation on March 11

Chicago (Feb. 26, 2010) Sr. Sheila Lyne, R.S.M., president and chief executive officer of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, will speak about health care and the Mercy tradition at Saint Xavier University’s Sister Josetta Butler Lecture at 7 p.m. March 11 in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Sr. Lyne’s lecture, “Healthcare in the Mercy Tradition,” is free and open to the public, and includes a question and answer session at the end of the lecture.

Sr. Lyne has been Mercy Hospital’s president and CEO since 2000, and previously from 1976 until 1990. She has focused on developing and expanding Mercy services to meet the needs of the surrounding communities. Sr. Lyne previously served as Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from Saint Xavier College, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Chicago.
Active in both health organizations and higher education, Sr. Sheila Lyne was the recipient of the SXU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

Named for Sister Mary Josetta Butler, R.S.M., the Sr. Josetta Butler Lecture is held every two years at Saint Xavier. Sr. Butler was Dean of Saint Xavier College from 1941 to 1963 and President of from 1960 to 1963. Her significant contributions as a Sister of Mercy, a college administrator, and an innovative educator have had a lasting influence on Saint Xavier, and the Board of Trustees in 1990 established a fund endowing the lecture series and an annual student scholarship.

SXU Music Department presents Opera in an Hour! An After-School Performance of “Die Fledermaus”

Operetta to be performed in English on March 10 at SXU

Chicago (Feb. 26, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Department of Music presents a one-hour narrated performance of Johann Strauss’ beloved operetta “Die Fledermaus” at 4 p.m. on Wed., March 10 in McGuire Hall at the University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

General admission is $6. Senior citizen admission is $5, and high school and junior college student admission is $2. SXU faculty, staff and students may attend free with ID.

Die Fledermaus tells the story of Gabriel von Eisenstein, who does not let his marriage to Rosalinda stand in the way of frequent dalliances with other beautiful young ladies. On his way to serve a brief jail term for insulting a public official, Eisenstein attends Prince Orlofsky’s party where he woos a glamorous Hungarian countess, who turns out to be none other than Rosalinda, seeking—and getting—her revenge for her husband’s indiscretions.

“'Die Fledermaus' is one of the most enduring and celebrated operettas in the world and features waltzes, polkas and lively melodies. The show examines the extravagant life of the upper class in late 19th-century Vienna,” said Performance Director and Director of Vocal Studies Jan Bickel, DMA. “‘Die Fledermaus,’ which translates to ‘The Bat,’ involves practical jokes, mistaken identities, disguises and royal parties.”

SXU University Relations wins Gold at 25th Annual Educational Advertising Awards

Commended for environmental sustainability promotions, web design and social media

Chicago (Feb. 25, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Office for University Relations won three awards at the 25th Annual Educational Advertising Awards, including first place for promoting the University’s environmental sustainability initiatives.

University Relations received a Gold award in the Total Public Relations Program category in the “School with 5,000 to 9,999” division for publicizing the University’s sustainability (“Green”) efforts. It also received a Bronze award in Web Site for the University’s Web site and a Merit Award in Social Media for the University’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

“Congratulations to our University Relations staff,” said Vice President for University Relations Robert Tenczar. “This recognition shines a bright light on a professional team effort of promoting Saint Xavier as a premiere institution of higher education.”

Chicago (Feb. 18, 2010) WGN-TV news anchor/reporter Tom Negovan discussed his experiences while embedded with United States troops in Afghanistan as part of Saint Xavier University's Squeaky Weal lecture series on Feb. 11, 2010.

Negovan spent time with Illinois National Guard troops in Afghanistan and reported on their lives, their patriotism and their sacrifices in the name of duty and freedom. His presentation, "Assignment Afghanistan: A Chicago Reporter's Journey to War and What He Learned There," kicked off the 2010 Squeaky Weal Lectures Series. Negovan focused on the difficulty of the soldiers' dual mission of befriending the local population and discovering and defeating Al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives.

The University and its Student Veterans Association presented Negovan with a University challenge coin, an American tradition meant in this instance to signal support for a strong commitment to veterans among the nations higher education community.

Saint Xavier University participates in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, in which institutions of higher learning universities can enter into an agreement with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate for both Undergraduate and Graduate programs.

SXU’s Board of Trustees elects new chair and vice chair

John T. Costello and Sr. Georgine Scarpino, R.S.M., begin two-year terms in May

Chicago (Feb. 17, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Board of Trustees elected a new chair, John T. Costello, and a new vice chair, Sister Georgine Scarpino, R.S.M., at its Feb. 10 meeting.

Costello and Scarpino’s two-year terms begin in May. They succeed Chair Thomas E. Chomicz and Vice Chair Patricia A. Morris, Ph.D., ’83, each having served two terms as chair and vice chair respectively.

“This marks the start of the next chapter at Saint Xavier,” said Costello. “I look forward to working closely with the Board, its new Vice Chair Sister Georgine Scarpino, R.S.M., and with President-elect Christine M. Wiseman to ensure a firm foundation for the future of the University. Likewise, I am most grateful to Thomas Chomicz and Patricia Morris for their extraordinary dedication, time and work on behalf of the University during their leadership terms.”

A Saint Xavier Board of Trustees member since 2008, Costello also is a member of the following University committees: Executive Committee, Chair of the Board Committee for University Advancement, Trusteeship Committee, Investments Committee and the Board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Finances.

Costello is retired from Exelon and ComEd, where he served as the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer. He also served as Senior Vice President, Operations, Exelon Energy Delivery (EED). Costello served on the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was a director of the Chicago Central Area Committee and Chicago Central Area Research and Study Committee and is a fellow of the Leadership Greater Chicago Program.

Costello holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in business administration from DePaul University.

Scarpino has been a Saint Xavier Board of Trustees member since 2005. She serves on the Executive Committee and is Board Committee for Investments Chairman. She lives in Pittsburgh and is a member of the New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West Community of the Sisters of Mercy. She has been an instructor at Carnegie Mellon University and Carlow University and an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs for 25 years. Scarpino was president of the Pittsburgh Sisters of Mercy from 1996 to 2004.

Scarpino holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Carlow University, a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in public administration from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and international affairs.

SXU to host early childhood development conference

“Early Childhood Today: Building Our Future One Child at a Time” on March 3 at Orland Park campus

Chicago (Feb. 16, 2010) Saint Xavier University will host an early childhood development conference for parents, caregivers and professionals from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wed., March 3 at its Orland Park Campus, 18230 Orland Parkway.

The conference, “Early Childhood Today: Building Our Future One Child at a Time,” will host several workshops geared toward people shaping the lives of children ages birth to eight.

The workshops will address five different themes, including: social and emotional; speech and language; accommodations; early literacy; and health and wellness. Scheduled workshops include “Got Dirt: Growing Healthy Kids,” “Classroom Adaptations,” “Engaging the Brain,” “Phonemic Fun,” “Working Together” and many more.

Pre-registration is required, and all participants must register online. On-site and phone registration is not allowed. Seats are limited, and registration is accepted based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration costs $35 and includes session materials, continental breakfast and lunch. Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. the day of the conference. Childcare is not available at the conference. Families with special needs children up to eight years old may apply for a reimbursement stipend by visiting STAR NET’s Web site or calling (708) 342-5370.

Co-sponsors include STAR NET Region VI and Saint Xavier University, in collaboration with SSAEYC, SPEED Cooperative, Good Shepherd Center and the Early Intervention Training Program.

Cardinal Francis George will celebrate mass on Feb. 24 at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral

Chicago (Feb. 16, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Chapel Choir will lead the music at the 11th Annual Mass for College Students with Cardinal Francis George, Archbishop of Chicago, on Wed., Feb. 24.

Mass will be held at Chicago’s Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. Reconciliation will be available from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and mass begins at 7 p.m. A reception will follow on the 15th floor of Kasbeer Hall at Loyola University, 25 E. Pearson St.

Cardinal George celebrates the mass each year with students from across the greater Chicago area, and attendees will be able to meet with the Cardinal afterwards.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Saint Xavier to share our Chapel Choir, which we are blessed to experience at every Sunday Student Mass, with Cardinal George and other colleges,” said Director of Campus Ministry Esther Sanborn. “Our choir has grown tremendously in numbers, talent and spirit over the last few years, especially under the direction of Allen and Patti Stock.”

ComEd Chairman/CEO Frank M. Clark to be honored with SXU’s highest honor, the Shield of Saint Xavier

Chicago (Feb. 9, 2010) Frank M. Clark, chairman and chief executive officer of ComEd, will receive the Shield of Saint Xavier at the 25th Annual President’s Scholarship ball on Sat., March 20, 2010 at the Chicago Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Ave.

“The Shield of Saint Xavier is our University’s highest honor. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and service to the greater Chicago community, particularly to the city’s Catholic institutions,” said Interim President and Provost Angela Durante, Ph.D. “Mr. Clark’s leadership roles at ComEd and Exelon and his long history of civic involvement exemplify the ideals of Saint Francis Xavier, Mother Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy.”

The President’s Scholarship Ball has raised millions of dollars for the President’s Scholarship Program, which provides financial support to Saint Xavier’s most deserving students. The black-tie event is open to the public and President-Designate Christine M. Wiseman, J.D., will host a reception from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Online registration is now open.

As head of ComEd, Clark oversees one of the largest electrical utilities in the U.S. A subsidiary of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation, ComEd serves 3.8 million residential and business customers in northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state’s population.

Clark previously served as president of ComEd and was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company. He also was executive vice president and chief of staff of Exelon. Since joining ComEd in 1966, Clark rose steadily through the ranks, holding various positions in both corporate support and line functions. During his 43-year career at ComEd, he held key leadership positions at a number of business-critical functions across the company, including customer service operations; marketing and sales; regulatory, governmental and community affairs; information technology; communications; human resources; labor relations; and distribution services.

Clark serves on the board of trustees of the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, DePaul University, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the University of Chicago Medical Center; the board of directors of Metropolitan Family Services, Illinois Manufacturers Association, Big Shoulders Fund, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, Waste Management, Inc., Harris Financial Corp. and Aetna Inc.; and the executive committee of The Chicago Community Trust. He sits on the governing board of the Illinois Council on Economic Education and is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the Economic Club of Chicago, The Commercial Club of Chicago, and the Executives’ Club of Chicago. Clark is a co-founder of the Rowe-Clark Math & Science Academy on Chicago's west side.

Clark received his bachelor’s and law degrees from DePaul University.

SXU Gallery to host “Extended” art exhibition

Exhibit runs until Feb. 17 with artists’ reception on Feb. 10

Chicago (Feb. 5, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Art Department is hosting a faculty art exhibition from now until Wed., Feb. 17 at the SXU Gallery located in the Warde Academic Center at the University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The exhibition, “Extended,” highlights SXU’s extended campus and the new Visual Arts Center. The exhibition will showcase works by faculty members who teach at the new facility. Additionally, there will be an artists’ reception from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at the SXU Gallery.

Faculty showcasing their works include: Amanda Joy Calobrisi, painting; Marie Cassidy, watercolor, collage and photography; Kristin Tomsits-Dunn, graphic design; William Guy, photography; Mary Jo Krysinski, silver and gemstone jewelry; Susannah Papish, painting; and Chris Schedel, photography.

The exhibition is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency that strives to encourage the development of the arts throughout Illinois and assists artists and arts organizations in Illinois.

International Financier/Chicago Media Leader James C. Tyree discusses “the good, the bad and the ugly” of the U.S. economy at SXU

Mesirow Financial CEO/President and Sun-Times Media Holdings, LLC chairman expresses guarded optimism about economy, future of the media at “Breakfast with the Experts” series

Chicago (Feb. 3, 2010) Chicago-based business and civic leader James C. Tyree kicked off Saint Xavier University’s 2010 Breakfast with the Experts speaker series with frank talk about the economy, health care, the “unconscionably large” national debt and his recent acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Tyree, who is chairman and CEO of the international financial services firm Mesirow Financial and chairman of Sun-Times Media Holdings, LLC., said America’s business climate can be broken down into “the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good is real opportunities for growth because the business world essentially has been reset. The bad is “there are still serious risks and people should be cautious. The ugly is real estate which isn’t coming back any time soon.”

“We’re devastated there,” he said. “It’ll be a drag on our economy for some time.”

Tyree spoke in support of making health care available not for everyone, but for people who lack insurance, citing health care costs as the biggest source of personal bankruptcies in America.

Tyree said government stimulus spending was necessary to stave off a depression, but questioned how it is being allocated. He called the national debt “unconscionably large,” but doesn’t think it will result in high inflation because of increases in productivity and industrial capacity. He said a greater concern is foreign countries holding the United States’ debt.

Tyree said the business world is rapidly changing due to technological advances. He said the keys to getting ahead are developing new skills and being prepared to use them 24/7.

Overall, Tyree expressed optimism tempered by the realities of the country’s difficult situation. He said jobs still aren’t being created but personal incomes are rising for those who are working.

“It’s going to be slow, choppy growth,” he said, adding he is “100 percent certain that we are going to get through these tough times.”

Tyree also discussed the changing world of the media, particularly the decline of printed news. He said good content driven by facts and professionalism will remain the key driver for journalism in the future but also that newspapers have a bad business model that is evolving because it is not sustainable.

“We’re not out of the woods,” he said. “It’ll take a little time, but we’re confident that the Sun-Times Media Group will be successful.”

In his opening remarks, Tyree attributed his upbringing in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood and suburban Oak Lawn with helping him succeed in the business world. He said he wished he could give his own children the strong sense of community he found in his youth.

“The South Side never leaves you,” he said. “Never, ever, ever.”

Banker and alum Darrell B. Jackson to speak at SXU’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration

President of Personal Financial Services – Illinois to speak at 4:30 p.m., Jan. 19 at Chicago campus

Chicago (Jan. 15, 2010) Saint Xavier University alumnus Darrel B. Jackson ‘81, president of Personal Financial Services – Illinois, will speak at Saint Xavier University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

Jackson will give a lecture titled “What Happens to a Dream Deferred?” at 4:30 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 19 in the Warde Academic Center’s Butler Reception Room at the University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. The event is open to the public.

Jackson is a career banker with nearly 30 years experience in the industry. He previously was Deputy Head of Private Client Services – Illinois and Head of Private Client Services, Suburban Illinois at The Northern Trust Company, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Trust Company’s Illinois West Suburban Region and a Senior Vice President and Division Manager in Private Banking at the Northern Trust Company in Chicago.

Jackson serves on the Boards of the Illinois Banker's Association and the Morton Arboretum. He is a member of the Union League Club and The Graham School of Management Advisory Council at Saint Xavier. He previously served on the following boards: Executives Breakfast Club of Oakbrook, the Conservation Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, The Chicago Child Care Society, The Cosmopolitan Chamber of Commerce, The Children’s Inner City Educational Fund, the Dave Duerson Foundation, ETA Creative Arts Foundation, Inc., Junior Achievement of Chicago, The Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Saint Xavier University.

Darrell received The Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award from The Boys and Girls Club of Chicago in 2004. He also was voted one of the 40 Leaders of Color by Chicago United in 2003.

Darrell received a B.A. degree from Saint Xavier and a M.B.A. degree from the Kellogg Executive Masters Program at Northwestern University.

SXU Music Department hosts “Return of the Divas” Faculty Recital

7:30 p.m., Tues., Jan. 26 at Chicago campus

Chicago (Jan. 15, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s Department of Music will host a faculty recital, “Return of the Divas,” at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 26, in McGuire Hall in the Warde Academic Center at the University’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Saint Xavier Adjunct Music Professor Carolyn Brady Riley, M.M., performed a highly acclaimed recital with Soprano and Guest Artist Michelle Vought, D.M.A. of Illinois State University in 2009. The two “Dazzling Divas” return for their second performance, a recital of French and Puccini arias, selections from musical theatre, duets and crowd-pleasing standards.

The event is open to the public. Saint Xavier students, faculty and staff can attend for free with valid University ID. General admission is $6, and $5 for seniors and visiting students.

He will speak with a Chicago perspective on national and world business issues relating to finance and media, and then answer audience questions.

Tyree grew up in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood and suburban Oak Lawn. His first jobs were delivering newspapers, the Beverly Review and the Southtown Economist (known today as the SouthtownStar). He earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA at Illinois State University prior to joining Mesirow Financial as a research analyst in 1980. He became Mesirow Financial’s president in 1990 and has been chairman and CEO since 1994. He is chairman of the board of City Colleges of Chicago and is chairman of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. He serves on several business, educational and charitable organizations’ boards.

Her lecture, “Imagine That! Scriptures and Stories,” is an imaginative exploration of select gospel stories about Jesus and His encounters with others, portraying the human qualities of Jesus emphasized by Saint Paul.

SXU School of Nursing Dean named to La Rabida Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees

Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D., to serve three-year term at Chicago hospital

Chicago (Jan. 6, 2010) Saint Xavier University School of Nursing Dean Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D., was named to the Board of Trustees at La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago at the Board’s most recent meeting in December.

La Rabida provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary health services to children across a continuum of care and is dedicated to excellence in caring for children with chronic illness, disabilities or those who have been victims of abuse, regardless of their ability to pay.

“I am honored to have been offered this opportunity and am delighted to serve as a Trustee of La Rabida Children’s Hospital, a Chicago institution that has helped children reach their highest potential since 1896,” said Jacobson. “No other hospital in Chicago is more dedicated to the care of children with chronic illness, developmental disabilities and those who have experienced abuse and trauma.”

“Because we serve some 9,000 chronically ill children and their families as a medical home and because these children and families will be with us from early childhood to adulthood, it is essential our Trustees contain members, who like Dr. Jacobson, through their care, interest and dedication, will continue to ensure quality care for our children, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Michael C. Cleavenger, La Rabida vice president of fund development.

Jacobson will serve a three-year term and sit on La Rabida’s Quality Management committee.
Founded in 1935, the Saint Xavier University School of Nursing offered the first baccalaureate nursing program to receive accreditation in the State of Illinois. As one of the first baccalaureate nursing programs in the State of Illinois, over 5,382 students have graduated during the past 75 years. Many School of Nursing graduates hold key positions, both nationally and internationally, in nursing practice, education, administration, and research. Both baccalaureate and master's degree programs at Saint Xavier University are currently accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
