Daylong event for teachers, professionals and parents who play role in promoting literacy
Chicago (Sept. 14, 2010) Saint Xavier University’s School of Education will host the 2010 Harvest Literacy Conference, a daylong event for teachers, professionals and parents who play an important role promoting literacy, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 13 at the Orland Park campus, 18230 Orland Parkway.
Laurie Elish-Piper, Ph.D, Presidential Teaching Professor in Literacy Education and Director of the Literacy Clinic at Northern Illinois University, will deliver the keynote address, titled "Parents as Partners in Literacy." Elish-Piper also is a columnist for the Illinois Reading Council Journal and is president of the College Reading Association. She has received the Northern Illinois University Award for Exceptional Contributions to Teaching, College of Education in 2005, the Northern Illinois University Award for Exceptional Contributions for Partnership Activity in 2003, and has authored books and research articles.
Other speakers will focus on topics in reading with practical suggestions for the classroom teacher, including; response to intervention, content area reading, 21st century literacy (blogs, wikis and nings), writing, comprehension strategies, assessment, cultural awareness in literacy, children's literature on bullying, various reading strategies and poetry.
Attendees can meet author Tom Lichtenheld and explore how to use humorous books in the classroom to promote literacy. Additionally this year, new and gently used children's books will be accepted for Rock for Reading and donated to local schools.
Register electronically for the conference here, or via the printer-friendly registration form. The conference is open to the public, but pre-registration is required and seats are limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be no on-site or phone registration allowed. Early bird registration costs $125 and must be completed by Fri., Sept. 24. Registration afterwards costs $140 and must be received by Fri., Oct. 8. The registration fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, and instruction and workshop materials. This year's keynote address will be streamed into additional rooms for the comfort of all attendees.

SXU President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D., to give first 2010-11 Theology South lecture
"How Faith Influences Leadership" on Oct. 7 at Chicago campus

Wiseman, J.D., will give the first lecture in the 2010-11 "Theology South: A Forum for Thought" lecture series from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thurs., Oct. 7 in the Warde Academic Center's Butler Reception Room at the University's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
The lecture open to the public and costs $6. Coffee will be served at 9 a.m. and a question and answer session will follow the lecture.
Wiseman's lecture, titled "How Faith Influences Leadership," will rely on personal memoir and the vision of social justice grounded in the Gospel of Jesus and the life of the Church to explore how claims of faith influence leadership in these challenging times. Department of Religious Studies Chair Avis Clendenen, D.Min, Ph.D., will give a short visual presentation before the lecture.
Wiseman is SXU’s 19th president. She has spent nearly 30 highly successful years in Catholic higher education, previously serving as Provost and Professor of Law at Loyola University of Chicago.

“Financing Your Future: A Presentation about the Affordability of a College Education” is free and open to the public. It will focus on the resources, timelines and choices students and families face as they prepare to pay for college, and on helping them understand the issues surrounding college affordability. The session includes time for questions about financial aid, scholarships and the decision-making process concerning the college costs.

SXU begins 2010-11 film series with Modern Times
First in “Working on Film” series
Chicago (Sept. 2, 2010) Saint Xavier University will screen the 1936 film Modern Times at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 16 in McGuire Hall, Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Charlie Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world in Modern Times. The film is a comment on the desperate employment and fiscal conditions many people faced during the Great Depression; conditions caused, in Chaplin's view, by the dehumanizing efficiency of modern industrialization. Starring Chaplin, Paulette Godard, Henry Bergman, Stanley Sandford and Chester Conklin.
Modern Times is the first of six movies in Saint Xavier’s 2010-11 film series, “Working on Film.” This year’s film series offers an array of screenings that shed light on the experience of labor: how and where people work and the ways that work affects personal life. These stories of work span 80 years of film making and stretch across the globe, linked by the universality of work and human dignity. Upcoming films include El Norte, Bitter Rice, Killer of Sheep, Norma Rae and Baran.
