Public invited to receive free health screenings at SXU’s Eighth Annual Health Fair
Talk with local health care professionals and see health demonstrations on Fri., March 25
Chicago (March 8, 2011) Free health screenings, assessments and information are available at Saint Xavier University’s Eighth Annual Health Fair from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Fri., March 25, in the Chicago campus’ Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd St. The fair is free and open to the public.
Attendees can receive free screenings and testing services for blood pressure, bone density, hearing and vision screenings, foot screenings, cervical spine screenings, blood glucose screenings, injury assessments, postural assessment, shoe assessments and more. Reflexology, hand massages, and mini chair massages also will be offered for free. Nutrition, heath, and wellness information will be available with healthy cooking demonstrations and 15-minute nutrition presentations offered every hour starting at 8:30 a.m. Heartland Blood Centers also will host a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Shannon Center parking lot.
New to this year’s Health Fair are bone density screenings from Metro South Medical Center as well as polishing and hand massages by Tricoci University students.
Neighborhood vendors will be at the fair to share health information with the community, including: Little Company of Mary; MetroSouth Medical Center; American Heart Association; Advocate Trinity Hospital; Beltone Hearing Care Centers; WellGroup Health Partners and Devine Nutrition; Advocate Eyecare Professionals; PC Podiatrist - Dr. Sheffey, Greenwood Chiropractic Clinic; Curves; SXU’s Ludden Speech Clinic; Accelerated Rehab Physical Therapy; Reflexology-A Better Choice; Running for Kicks; American Cancer Society; Blue Cross Blue Shield/Machon and Machon; CVS Pharmacy & Minute Clinic; Heartland Blood Centers; Advocate Christ Hospital Cardiac and Stroke Prevention; Core Fitness and Physical Therapy/Beverly Spinning; Advocate Christ Center for Breast Care; Cardinal Fitness; Cook County Department of Public Health; Chicago Department of Public Health; Illinois Secretary of State: Organ and Tissue Donor Registration; Dental Assistant Matt Kula; Rosecrance Health Network; Natural Instincts Fitness Studio; Reliv International; Caring Touch Inc, Premier Home Care Supplies; Chiro One Wellness Centers; Leukemia and Lymphoma; Nutrition is You, Inc; Shaklee, and several others.
Representatives from the following SXU departments also will be present at the fair: Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health Center; Department of Employee Services; School of Nursing; and the Shannon Center. Participants can purchase any health- and fitness-related books at a 40 percent discount, sponsored by the SXU Bookstore.
Light refreshments from Muscle Milk, Honest Tea, Starbucks, Great American Bagel, Panera Bread, Minute Rice and Chartwells Smoothies also will be available. Parents can enjoy a children's activity corner as well as bean bags, Wii games and face painting.
“It is important that people of all ages have the opportunity to learn how to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Jennifer Kjos Quinlan, facility manager of Saint Xavier University’s Shannon Center and organizer of the event. “The SXU Health Fair is a one-stop shop to receive free health screenings, instructions, mini massages and much more provided by local vendors.”
