Two-time Academy Award-nominated Disney producer to hold Chicago premiere of new documentary at SXU
“Hand Held” explores heartbreaking plight of 400,000 Romanian orphans through lens of Pulitzer Prize-nominated photographer
Chicago (March, 2011) Saint Xavier University will host the Chicago premiere of Hand Held, a documentary exploring the plight of the 400,000 children in Romania’s orphanages after the fall of communism. Creators Don Hahn, award-winning producer and documentary filmmaker, and Michael Carroll, photographer and Romanian Children’s Relief founder, will attend the Sat., April 2 premiere.
The premiere is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at McGuire Hall, located at SXU’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. It is free and open to the public, and a short question-and-answer session will follow the film.
Hand Held is a documentary film produced and directed by Hahn, a two-time Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker who produced classic Disney films such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The film examines Carroll’s exploration of one of the most appalling scenes of the 20th century – the overcrowded Romanian orphanages discovered in the wake of the collapse of that nation’s communist regime. Carroll documented the horror for The Boston Globe, The New York Times and other publications, meanwhile founding Romanian Children’s Relief to bring aid to the subjects in his lens. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his work.
Hand Held is sponsored by the Sweeney Family Annual Lecture and hosted by SXU’s Center for Religion and Public Discourse.
Media interested in interviewing Hahn or Carroll should contact Assistant Director of Media Relations Rick Ducat at (773) 298-3325 or ducat@sxu.edu.

SXU continues 2010-11 film series with “Norma Rae”
Sixth installment in “Working on Film” series
Chicago (March, 2011) Saint Xavier University will screen the 1979 film “Norma Rae” on Thurs., March 17 in McGuire Hall, Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Directed by Martin Ritt, “Norma Rae” tells the story of a factory worker from a small town in Alabama who becomes involved in the labor union activities at the textile factory where she works. The film stars Sally Field in the titular role, Beau Bridges as Norma Rae's husband, Sonny, and Ron Liebman as union organizer Reuben Warshowsky. Sally Field won both an Academy Award and a Best Actress Award from the Cannes Film Festival for her performance.
“Norma Rae" is the sixth of seven movies in SXU's 2010-11 film series, “Working on Film.” This year’s film series offers an array of screenings that shed light on the experience of labor: how and where people work and the ways that work affects personal life. These stories of work span 80 years of film making and stretch across the globe, linked by the universality of work and human dignity. "Baran” is the final film in the series.
For more information, contact Film Series Director Alison Fraunhar, Ph.D., at fraunhar@sxu.edu or (773) 298-3083.

Artist John Stanicek’s works to be displayed at SXU Gallery
Ceramic sculpture and graphite drawings from March 10 through April 5
Chicago (March 1, 2011) The works of graphic artist/illustrator John Stanicek will be displayed from Thurs., March 10 to Tues., April 5 at Saint Xavier University's SXU Gallery, located in the Chicago Campus' Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St.
Stanicek will give a lecture about the exhibit, titled "Drawn to Clay," at a reception at 3:30 p.m., Thurs., March 10 in the gallery. Stanicek said the exhibit is inspired by machines and their components.
“Every day of this modern life we are exposed to machines and mechanical things. Still, we seldom consider our encounter with these objects significant even though they do the work, provide the work, or save on the work of our daily routine,” said Stanicek. “Their presence and influence are often overlooked. We love them and we hate them, yet this relationship is ever present.”
Stanicek is a graphic artist/illustrator from Aurora and works as a Studio Artist in ceramics at Waubonsee Community College. His work has been displayed throughout Illinois since 2003.
The Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, please contact the Gallery at (773) 298-3081.
