SXU School of Nursing receives $100,000 donation

Gift will go toward scholarship endowment, naming older adult care simulation room

Chicago (March 28, 2011) Saint Xavier University was pleased to accept a $100,000 gift to its School of Nursing, which will be used to start a new scholarship endowment and name an older adult care simulation room.

The donation comes from Charles E. Schmidt, widower of Mary Kay Millea Schmidt ’44. Mary Kay, an SXU School of Nursing alumna, passed away last September.

The gift will endow a scholarship in memory of Mary Kay that will be awarded to a deserving School of Nursing student by the 2011 Fall semester.

It also will name the expanded Nursing Lab’s older adult care simulation room “The Mary Kay and Charles E. Schmidt Room.” This room will simulate a home health care environment focusing on caring for the elderly, supporting gerontology coursework and preparing students for community health clinical experiences. The Mary Kay and Charles E. Schmidt Room is expected to be complete by the 2011 Fall semester.
