Celebrate creative broadcasting by listening to WXAV 88.3FM today on College Radio Day

WXAV Station Manager Peter Kreten co-founded international event recognizing this unique form of media

Celebrate creative broadcasting by listening to Saint Xavier University's student-run radio station WXAV 88.3FM on the first College Radio Day, Tues., Oct. 11.

The event aims to raise greater awareness of North America's many college radio stations, said WXAV Station Manager and event co-founder Peter Kreten. More than 300 stations from 44 states and three countries have signed up to participate in the event, including Northwestern University, Southern Illinois University, DePaul University, Loyola University and North Central College.

WXAV's theme for the day is "Past, Present and Future." Scott Lucas, of the groups Local H and Scott Lucas & The Married Men, will give a special in-studio interview and acoustic performance. The station will feature a day of music from college radio giants such as R.E.M., The Pixies, Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, The Shins, The Libertines, Shayfer James, Murder by Death, NewVillagers, and William Elliott Whitmore. Additionally, WXAV will air a three-part documentary called "College Radio: Its Past, Present and Future" as well as a documentary about the founding of WXAV and its history.

"College radio is one of the last remaining bastions of creative programming that's free from the restrictions of commercial viability," Kreten said. "It offers unique, fearless programming that play unsigned, local and independent artists on a regular basis."
