Chicago (Oct. 18, 2011)
The Saint Xavier University community recently celebrated the dedication of the Mary Kay ’44 and Charles E. Schmidt Lifespan Learning Lab in the School of Nursing. More than 150 of Charles and Mary Kay Schmidt’s family and friends gathered at McDonough Chapel for a liturgy in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt on Oct. 9. Following the liturgy, nursing students escorted guests to the School of Nursing for the special dedication and blessing of the new Lifespan Learning Lab.

President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D. was delighted to accept a $100,000 gift in March, 2011 from Charles E. Schmidt, widower of Mary Kay Millea Schmidt ’44, for the naming of the lab. This important addition to SXU's Nursing Resource Center will help students develop and refine their skills in a controlled environment. It features special equipment to simulate caring for infants, children and adults, as well as rooms to support gerontology coursework and prepare students for community health clinical experiences. The gift also provides for an endowed scholarship in memory of Mary Kay.

Mary Kay, a proud nursing alumna, died in 2010. Mr. Schmidt was pleased to honor the memory of his beloved Mary Kay with this generous gift to the University.
