Chicago (Oct. 5, 2010) Former Archdiocese of Chicago Vice-Chancellor Monsignor Kenneth Velo will kick off Saint Xavier University's 2010-11 Catholic Colloquium lecture series at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Oct. 19 in the Warde Academic Center's Butler Reception Room at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.The lecture is free and open to the public.
Msgr. Velo's lecture, titled "Where the Light Shines: Catholics in Chicago,” will reflect on the words of the prophet Micah; “This is what the Lord asks of you, only this – to do justice, to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Mi. 6:8). Msgr. Velo will explore ways in which contemporary Catholics continue to strive toward that ideal.
A Chicago native, Msgr. Velo is an Archdiocese of Chicago priest, Senior Executive for Catholic Collaboration at DePaul University and President of the Big Shoulders Fund. He was vice-chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago and later, executive assistant to the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. He is past president of the Catholic Church Extension Society, which supports Catholic dioceses in mission areas of the United States.
The Catholic Colloquium series is sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Heritage. It honors the responsibilities of a Catholic university to its many constituents and illustrates how Catholic universities are resources for examining contemporary civic and social questions.
