SXU continues 2010-11 Film Series with "El Norte"

Second in "Working in Film" series

Chicago (Oct. 5, 2010) Saint Xavier University will screen the 1983 film El Norte at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 14 in McGuire Hall, Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Directed by Gregory Nava, this classic story of the plight of illegal immigrants depicts the struggles of a young Guatemalan brother and sister who flee the widespread ethnic and political persecution in their homeland. They travel north through Mexico, suffering hardship and abuse in their harrowing journey to the United States. El Norte was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1985, the first American independent film to be so honored. In 1995, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

El Norte is the second of six movies in Saint Xavier’s 2010-11 film series, “Working on Film.” This year’s film series offers an array of screenings that shed light on the experience of labor: how and where people work and the ways that work affects personal life. These stories of work span 80 years of film making and stretch across the globe, linked by the universality of work and human dignity. Upcoming films include Bitter Rice, Killer of Sheep, Norma Rae and Baran.
