Cokie Roberts draws more than 1,100 to SXU's fifth Voices and Visions Lecture
ABC political analyst gave insider's view of Washington, D.C. and issues facing lawmakers
Chicago (Oct. 22, 2010) Former network news anchor and ABC political analyst Cokie Roberts drew more than 1,100 people to the fifth installment of Saint Xavier University's Voices and Visions lecture series on Oct. 21.
Roberts brought a practiced political eye and keen perspective to the issues currently facing lawmakers in her lecture “An Insider’s View of Washington, D.C. with Cokie Roberts.” Prior to her lecture, Roberts participated in an exclusive classroom discussion with SXU students.
Roberts discussed heightened partisanship among elected officials, the relevance of the Tea Party movement and three important long-term demographic trends: the closing of the "gender gap," referring to women voters previously being more likely to vote for Democrats; the growing political influence of minorities; and President Barack Obama attracting large numbers of young voters during the 2008 election. She drew parallels between the Reagan Revolution of 1980 and the current political environment, suggesting the country may have made a generational shift toward the Democratic Party.
"I look at the long-term trajectory and I look at the issues younger voters are interested in and I still think it's possible, even after the bath Democrats are likely to take in this election, that we are looking at the ushering in of another generation of change in politics," Roberts said.
Roberts is senior news analyst for National Public Radio and a political analyst for ABC News. She co-anchored the weekly ABC interview program "This Week" from 1996 to 2002. Roberts has won numerous awards, including three Emmys, in her more than 40 years in broadcasting. She has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame, and was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. The Library of Congress this year named her a “Living Legend.”

SXU hosts fifth annual “Breakfast With Your Legislators” question-and-answer and networking event
Attendees included Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3rd), State Sen. Edward Maloney (D-18th), State Rep. Al Riley (D-38), State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-31st) and State Rep. John O'Sullivan (D-35th)
Chicago (Oct. 19, 2010) Elected officials from the southern Chicago area answered questions from local business leaders about everything from the health care reform bill to Illinois' pension budget shortfall at the fifth annual “Breakfast with your Legislators” event today. The Beverly Area Planning Association and the Blue Island, Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn Chambers of Commerce presented the event. Saint Xavier University hosted the event at its Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. AT&T sponsored the event.
Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3rd), State Sen. Edward Maloney (D-18th), State Rep. Al Riley (D-38), State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-31st) and State Rep. John O'Sullivan (D-35th) attended the event.
Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3rd) on opposing the health care reform bill:
"I opposed it because I don't think in the long run it is fiscally sustainable. I think we need to do more to reform the health care system. There's a perverse incentive in our system to keep ordering more and more tests because it's paid for by quantity rather than the quality of care people receive, and I think that's the big reason why we spend so much in this country on health care than other countries without being more healthy. I have not supported repeal. I want reform, I don't want to repeal and have nothing."
State Sen. Edward Maloney (D-18th) on Illinois Monetary Assistance Program grant funding for college students:
"MAP funding has been flat the past several years, we had to go through a major battle to get it funded last spring. I really think the victory in getting it funded was due to students who told their stories and contacted their local legislators, saying 'if this isn't funded I can't go to school.' The problem with MAP is it's currently going to be flat funded again and as the costs go up students have less money to deal with."
State Rep. Al Riley (D-38) on the state's pension funding shortfall:
"It comes from a lot of things – the economic situation that hurt all states equally, but also from neglect. Every time we do a budget, the unfunded pension budget hangs like a sword of Damocles above everyone's head. I think there were some systemic problems with the way we addressed these issues in the past, and you can't do a meaningful budget without looking at how you're going to deal with this $80 billion."
State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-31st) on the housing foreclosure crisis:
"There's a mortgage crisis going on here and a lot of us did not create this crisis. A lot of people have lost their homes because they trusted the people telling them to refinance their homes. We trusted them and we believed in them and we didn't know about all these shenanigans going on, so it's in the state's best interest to make sure that for those who can afford to stay in their homes that we should provide them with a way and a means."
State Rep. John O'Sullivan (D-35th) on the biggest issues in the upcoming veto session:
"I think one of the most important things we're going to face in the veto session are funding for education. Before we go with a tax increase, I think we should consider property tax relief for homeowners."

National League for Nursing names SXU program to second consecutive "Center of Excellence" designation
SXU one of six programs nationwide to receive honor
Chicago (Oct. 7, 2010) Saint Xavier University's School of Nursing was one of only six programs in the nation to be honored by the National League for Nursing as a "Center of Excellence" during its 2010 Education Summit in Las Vegas.
SXU received the prestigious designation for creating environments that enhance student leaning and professional development. SXU previously received the three-year designation in 2007.
Each year since 2004, the NLN has invited nursing schools to apply based on their ability to demonstrate sustained excellence in faculty development, nursing education research, or student learning and professional development. Schools must also have a proven commitment to continuous quality improvement.
“The two most important factors in this achievement are the School of Nursing faculty and their students,” said School of Nursing Dean Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D. “Our faculty are engaging educators who are enthusiastic, positive and proud to be a part of the nursing profession, and identify and respond to students’ learning needs. The students are focused and work with persistence and diligence to achieve their goal of a career as a registered professional nurse. It is a winning combination!"
SXU's School of Nursing this year celebrates its 75th Anniversary. Saint Xavier and Mercy Hospital, both founded by the Sisters of Mercy, joined forces in 1935 to create the first integrated baccalaureate nursing program in Illinois. Today, 75 years later the SON remains strongly committed to linking innovation and concern for community, to providing basic and advanced nursing education programs, outreach programs, and to providing clinical services to surrounding communities.

Msgr. Kenneth Velo kicks off SXU's 2010-11 Catholic Colloquium lecture series
"Where the Light Shines: Catholics in Chicago" on Oct. 19
Chicago (Oct. 5, 2010) Former Archdiocese of Chicago Vice-Chancellor Monsignor Kenneth Velo will kick off Saint Xavier University's 2010-11 Catholic Colloquium lecture series at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Oct. 19 in the Warde Academic Center's Butler Reception Room at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Msgr. Velo's lecture, titled "Where the Light Shines: Catholics in Chicago,” will reflect on the words of the prophet Micah; “This is what the Lord asks of you, only this – to do justice, to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Mi. 6:8). Msgr. Velo will explore ways in which contemporary Catholics continue to strive toward that ideal.
A Chicago native, Msgr. Velo is an Archdiocese of Chicago priest, Senior Executive for Catholic Collaboration at DePaul University and President of the Big Shoulders Fund. He was vice-chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago and later, executive assistant to the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. He is past president of the Catholic Church Extension Society, which supports Catholic dioceses in mission areas of the United States.
The Catholic Colloquium series is sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Heritage. It honors the responsibilities of a Catholic university to its many constituents and illustrates how Catholic universities are resources for examining contemporary civic and social questions.
For additional information, please contact the Office for University Mission and Heritage at (773) 298-3981 or mareska@sxu.edu.

SXU continues 2010-11 Film Series with "El Norte"
Second in "Working in Film" series
Chicago (Oct. 5, 2010) Saint Xavier University will screen the 1983 film El Norte at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 14 in McGuire Hall, Warde Academic Center, 3700 W. 103rd St., Chicago.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Directed by Gregory Nava, this classic story of the plight of illegal immigrants depicts the struggles of a young Guatemalan brother and sister who flee the widespread ethnic and political persecution in their homeland. They travel north through Mexico, suffering hardship and abuse in their harrowing journey to the United States. El Norte was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1985, the first American independent film to be so honored. In 1995, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
El Norte is the second of six movies in Saint Xavier’s 2010-11 film series, “Working on Film.” This year’s film series offers an array of screenings that shed light on the experience of labor: how and where people work and the ways that work affects personal life. These stories of work span 80 years of film making and stretch across the globe, linked by the universality of work and human dignity. Upcoming films include Bitter Rice, Killer of Sheep, Norma Rae and Baran.
For more information, contact Film Series Director Alison Fraunhar, Ph.D., at fraunhar@.sxu.edu or (773) 298-3083.

Saint Xavier University President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D.'s halftime speech to the homecoming crowd at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field was “interrupted” Saturday night when a flash mob of approximately 200 people broke out on the playing field. In the spirit of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" Wiseman joined the melee until the moment passed just as quickly as it began. To cap off the evening, the SXU Cougar Football team beat Taylor University by a score of 46-21, rounding out a successful homecoming day on the Chicago campus.
The flash mob was organized by SXU’s Office of Alumni and Parent Relations.
