SXU wraps up successful 2010 Homecoming Celebration

Undefeated Cougars beat Taylor University 46-21, Flash Mob halftime show, more than 1,000 attend 10th Annual Cougar 5k Run/Walk

Chicago (Oct. 8, 2010) Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends celebrated Saint Xavier University’s 2010 Homecoming with a week of events from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 at its Chicago campus.

The no. 3 ranked Cougars football team overcame wet and windy conditions to pick up a 46-21 Homecoming victory over Taylor University (Ind.) Oct. 2 at SXU's Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU retains its perfect 6-0 season, and improved to 3-0 in the MSFA. During a special halftime show, more than 200 students, alumni, staff, faculty and community members joined President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D. in SXU's first-ever "Flash Mob." The day also included an Alumni/Student Picnic hosted by the Alumni Association and Student Affairs, as well as an Alumni Reunion Tent at the Homecoming game. More than 100 alumni and friends celebrated with graduates from '70, '80, '85, '90, '00 and '05, and were entertained by The Katie Sullivan Band.
More than 1,000 people participated in the 10th Annual Cougar 5k Run/Walk on Oct. 2, including Cong. Dan Lipinski (D-3rd). Michael Bucholtz, of Chicago, finished with the best men's time, 18:21, and Amanda Janosz, of Orland Park, finished with the best women's time, 20:09. A portion of registration fees were donated to support student scholarships.

SXU honored several distinguished alumni on Oct. 1, including FEMA Regional Administrator Andrew Velasquez III '02, who received the Graham School of Management Distinguished Alumni Award. Other awardees include: Monica Ryan DNP, MS, RN, APN, CPN, ’75, ’87, School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award; Carol Fialkowski ’60, College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award; Jason Crean ’96, ’01, School of Education, George K. McGuire Award; and Yvonne Schmitt ’12 - School of Education George K. McGuire Student Award.

More than 60 alumni and students came together to volunteer for S.T.A.T. (Service Through Action Team) on Sept. 29, making more than 400 lunches for local shelters in less than one hour. Volunteers received monetary and food donations from alumni, students and friends of the University, which were given to The Port Ministries and P.R.I.D.E. Alternative School. The next S.T.A.T. Project is scheduled for Mon., Oct. 18.

The celebration concluded on Oct. 3 with an Alumni Mass celebrated by Monsignor Michael Boland '82. More than 50 alumni and friends returned to campus to celebrate at a brunch in honor of SXU's 2010 Alumni Association Award recipients, including: Darrell B. Jackson ’81, Distinguished Alumni Award; Patricia A. Morris ’83, Sister Dorothy Marie Peschon ’19 Award; and Abby Jambor Anderson ’04 and Rita A. Ford ’98, Faith in the Future Award.
