SXU alum named finalist in teaching awards

Joan Kenney in running for 2008 Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Awards

Chicago (April 1, 2008) Saint Xavier University alumna and educator Joan Kenney was named one of 17 finalists for the 2008 Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Awards.

Kenney, a Lombard resident who received a master’s in education from SXU in 2004, is a preschool teacher at Dever Elementary School in Chicago.

Five of the nominees will be chosen to represent the best of the field following a final application process that includes additional site visits and interviews by members of the Kohl McCormick Academy of Outstanding Educators. The five representatives will be announced in April, and they will be honored at the 2008 Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Awards luncheon ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, at the Westin River North in Chicago.

Each of the five winners will receive: a $5,000 cash award, a $1,000 cash award for the winner's school or center, a classroom visit from the StoryBus, providing hands-on learning for early literacy, a classroom field trip at the Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago, a day of professional development from the Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago and a graduate-level course at Chicago's renowned Erikson Institute. Each also will be inducted into the Kohl McCormick Academy of Outstanding Educators.
