Eileen Muldoon recognized for treating children with cleft palatesChicago (April 9, 2008) The Cook County Board of commissioners honored Saint Xavier University student Eileen Muldoon on Wednesday, April 9 for her recent volunteer work treating more than 120 children with cleft palates and lips in Bolivia.
The Board approved a resolution recognizing the Mount Greenwood resident’s “dedicated service to … the children of Santa Cruz, Bolivia” as part of a 10-day trip with Operation Smile, a worldwide medical charity dedicated to providing reconstructive surgery to underprivileged children.
“I’m grateful for the experience,” said Muldoon, a nursing graduate student and nurse at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. “The tears and looks of relief on some of the mothers’ faces, it really gave me a sense of wholeness.”
Children with cleft palates and lips often are afflicted with speech impediments, have trouble eating and face social rejection – difficulties Muldoon personally understands. Muldoon herself was born with a cleft palate that took three surgeries to correct, and her daughter also was treated for a cleft palate.
“Eileen’s personal commitment to aiding children suffering from this treatable condition is exemplary,” said Kay Thurn, SXU’s interim dean of nursing. “She truly represents the mission and core values of Saint Xavier University’s nursing program.”
