SXU raises nearly $300,000 for student scholarship program

23rd Annual President’s Scholarship Ball breaks fundraising record

Chicago (April 14, 2008) Saint Xavier University broke its fundraising record at the 23rd Annual President’s Scholarship Ball, raising nearly $300,000 in net proceeds for scholarships for deserving students. More than 500 guests joined the University on April 14 at the Hilton Chicago’s historic Grand Ballroom for an evening of dining and dancing.

Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce William M. Daley was awarded the Shield of Saint Xavier, the university’s highest honor, in recognition of his leadership and service to both Chicago and the entire nation. Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, William Daley’s brother, attended the event.

“This year more than ever, friends of Saint Xavier University have proven their generosity and commitment to higher education,” said University President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D. “We are delighted to recognize the Hon. William Daley for his long record of dedicated service to this region, particularly to Catholic institutions. We extend our gratitude to the many trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and friends who so generously supported the Ball. Likewise, I am grateful to the Ball’s Co-chairs, Saint Xavier Trustees Joseph Balasa and Ellen Mulaney, and their spouses, Nicolette Balasa and Charles Mulaney, for their extraordinary efforts toward the success of this year’s Ball.”

All proceeds from the ball go to the Presidential Scholarship Program, which provides financial support to Saint Xavier's most deserving students. Since the Ball’s inception in 1985, more than 1,600 students have received Presidential Scholarship awards ranging from $4,580 to $12,000. Currently, 324 SXU students receive Presidential Scholarships.

Daley served as Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton from 1997 to 2000. Today, he heads JP Morgan Chase’s Office of Corporate Social Responsibility and is Chairman of the JP Morgan Chase Foundation. He is a distinguished leader of American commerce, and serves on many boards which support the arts, education, and economic development. Daley is a former trustee of Saint Xavier University.
