Chicago Tribune columnist to speak at Saint Xavier University
Mary Schmich will speak at next Squeaky Weal Lecture
Chicago (March 18, 2009) Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich will discuss change in the new millennium as Saint Xavier University continues its 2008-09 Squeaky Weal Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 31.
Schmich’s presentation, titled “Adapt or Die: Surviving Change in the New Millennium,” will take place in the Butler Reception Room of the Warde Academic Center at 6:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Schmich attended Harvard on a Neiman Fellowship for journalism, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, received a Studs Terkel award and has been named Illinois Author of the Year by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. Her column, “Wear Sunscreen,” became a bestselling book and CD.
“We’re eager to have Ms. Schmich bring her creative, thoughtful, and sometimes wonderfully wry insights to our academic and local communities,” said Sister Joy Clough, R.S.M., coordinator of the Squeaky Weal Lecture Series. “Saint Xavier University is pleased to foster life long learning and the common good through opportunities such as this guest lecture.”
Saint Xavier’s Squeaky Weal lecture series explores issues of public concern with an emphasis on their religious, moral or ethical implications for the common good. The series is sponsored by the Center for Religion and Public Discourse.
