SXU’s School of Nursing gets “perfect score” on NCLEX exam

100% of class of ’09 pass nursing license test

Chicago (Oct. 20, 2009) One-hundred percent of Saint Xavier University’s May 2009 nursing program graduates passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses.

All of Saint Xavier’s 44 graduates passed the examination, compared to the average rate of 88.91 percent of first-time candidates educated in the United States. NCLEX exams are developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry-level.

The School of Nursing earned another perfect score on the most recent University job placement survey, given to bachelor recipients within a year of graduation - 100 percent of Saint Xavier School of Nursing graduates were employed full-time within a year of graduation.

“These results are testament to both the excellence of Saint Xavier’s School of Nursing, the caliber of its instructors and the dedication and work ethic of our students,” said School of Nursing Dean Gloria Jacobson, R.N., Ph.D.

Saint Xavier is one of only 15 universities in the country to receive the prestigious "Center of Excellence" designation by the National League of Nursing.

SXU creates Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness

New office will coordinate and oversee disaster preparedness and response efforts

Chicago (Oct. 19, 2009)
Saint Xavier University’s Department of Public Safety announces the creation of the Office of Emergency Management and Preparedness to oversee the University’s disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Assistant Director of Public Safety Nicholas Kuhr will head the office and lead its efforts in ensuring the University’s compliance with the Campus Security Enhancement Act of 2008. Additionally, the office will coordinate campus emergency planning, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery efforts, as well as centralize all campus-wide emergency/disaster plans, training and exercises.

The office will be primary liaison between the University and other external government emergency management agencies, and work closely with several local emergency agencies to develop and implement Saint Xavier’s overall crisis communication plan. It also is responsible for developing and maintaining the campus-wide Emergency Operations Plan and Campus Violence Prevention Plan, and providing technical and administrative support to the Campus Violence Prevention and Behavioral Threat Assessment Committee.

“Crisis and disaster events require campuses to not only prepare for such events, but also understanding of response capabilities and limitations,” said Public Safety Director and Saint Xavier Police Chief Paul Kolessar. “It is impossible to predict exactly when a crisis or disaster will occur, or the extent to which they might affect the campus. Through deliberate planning, preparing, and training, Saint Xavier University can greatly minimize losses from such events.”

SXU student voices heard at MAP grant rally in Springfield

Illinois House votes 115-0 to appropriate additional $205 million for student aid program

Saint Xavier University students with Illinois Governor Pat Quinn in Springfield. The students attended a rally successfully urging State Legislators to provide additional funding for Monetary Award Program grants.

Chicago (Oct. 15, 2009)
A Saint Xavier University student group took part in a rally urging Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Legislature to provide additional funding for Monetary Award Program Grants in Springfield, with the Illinois House voting 115-0 to appropriate another $205 million for the college student aid program. The House has not yet approved a source for the funds.

The Saint Xavier student group joined about 1,500 other students from across the state in ensuring their voices are heard on this important issue.

The budget that was passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor on July 14 provided approximately $220 million for MAP grants, about half of the proposed funding. The cuts to the program could have left as many as 138,000 students unable to return to college for the spring semester.

42.5 percent of Saint Xavier University undergraduates depend on MAP grants as of the 2009 Fall semester, amounting to a total of $5.8 million for this academic year, or an average of $4,492 per student for the academic year.

SXU Students to Join Oct. 15 State Capitol Rally

Urging Restoration of $200 million cut from State of Illinois MAP Program

Chicago (Oct. 14, 2009) A group of approximately 50 Saint Xavier University students will travel to the Illinois state capitol on Thursday, Oct. 15 to attend a rally urging legislators to restore funding for Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grants. The Illinois Education Association will host the event, and Governor Pat Quinn is scheduled to make an appearance. The rally is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at 100 E. Edwards St, Springfield, Ill. (in the parking lot of the Illinois Education Association).

The budget that was passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor on July 14 provides approximately $194 million for the Monetary Award Program. This is about half of last year’s MAP grant funds. If the General Assembly and Governor Quinn do not act to restore $200 million in MAP funds by the end of October, as many as 138,000 students will be unable to return to college for the spring semester.

Forty-one percent of Saint Xavier University undergraduates depend on MAP grants as of the 2009 Fall semester, amounting to a total of $5.8 million for this academic year, or an average of $4,492 per student for the academic year. The following SXU student statements demonstrate the human cost of the loss of these funds:

Maryah Marciniak
“I am horrified about losing my Map Grant. I am 28 years old, a mother of 3 young children and a wife. Both my husband and I attend Saint Xavier and will be graduating in May 2010. We both have come too far to not be able to walk across that stage in May and get our diploma. With a seven-, five- and one-year-old, it is impossible for me to work and go to school full time and take care of them. We cannot afford to pay two tuition payments (because my husband will lose his too). I just took the LSAT 2 weeks ago for law school and this is insane if I will have to forfeit my future because the state is not doing what it is supposed to do.”

Eduardo Garcia
“If the MAP grant is completely taken away, then my enrollment for the spring 2010 semester is in question.”

Tammy Ingraffia
“Most loan companies are not taking in new loan applicants. This is making it even harder for students to get money to be able to enroll in school for the 2010 school year. I work 20 hours a week and am scheduled to take 18 credit hours next semester. I am trying to take CLEP tests so I can lighten my load next semester and only take the 2 courses that I need to graduate in order to save money. It really does affect us financially.”

John Piekos
“Politicians are always stressing that the young people of today need a good education, but they are making it almost impossible. This grant is important for me because without it, I may not be able to continue my education here or anywhere else. My parents are already helping me out, but they have bills and two other sons to help. I do not want to leave Saint Xavier, but not getting this rest of this grant may force me to transfer out and seek other options.”

Hundreds, possibly thousands of students from around the State of Illinois will attend the rally, utilizing all available means of communication to deliver their message to legislators, including an expected “blitz” of social media messaging via means such as Twitter and Face book.

“We believe that the core values of Saint Xavier University compel us to participate in this important rally,” said Mark Piper, President of the Student Government Association. “Having our voices be heard is critical because access to education must be made available to all students in Illinois. It is necessary for our students, who will be negatively impacted by this cut, to defend their ability to continue their studies at Saint Xavier.”

Local check-in for Saint Xavier students attending the rally is 7:30 a.m. in front of the Warde Academic Center building at the main Chicago campus. Buses depart at 8 and will arrive in Springfield at 11 a.m. A meeting with local legislators is anticipated from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by the rally at 12:30 p.m.

SXU receives more than $250,000 federal grant to support bilingual English-Spanish speech-language pathology program

Program will aid growing population of Hispanic children with speech/language impairments across the country

Chicago (Oct. 13, 2009) Saint Xavier University has received a two-year, $256,490 federal grant to support graduate-level academic offerings for Hispanic American students.
The two year-long Bilingual English-Spanish for Speech-Language Pathology (BEST for SLP) project will start in January, 2010, with grant funds covering 100 percent of the project costs.

Professor Michael Flahive, Ph.D., of Saint Xavier’s Communication Sciences and Disorders department, will develop interactive multimedia instructional materials and learning activities to enhance the instruction of graduate-level, bilingual English-Spanish speech-language pathology students.

Students trained with these materials will be linguistically and culturally prepared to work with pre-school and school-aged Hispanic children with speech or language impairments or communication-affecting hearing loss. The materials developed under this grant will be used at Saint Xavier and made available to graduate speech pathology programs across the country to improve the quality and quantity of resources available to these bilingual graduate students.

The growing population of Hispanics in the United States has brought a concurrent increase in the number of Hispanic children who have speech or language impairments, or are hard of hearing. Identification, assessment and treatment of these children can be complicated when they come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken and effective treatment requires culturally and linguistically qualified speech-language pathologists. However, there is a serious under-representation of Hispanic SLPs in the United States and few university programs in speech-language pathology offer course work to prepare bilingual (English-Spanish) SLPs.

Saint Xavier received national recognition for its success in attracting, retaining and graduating Hispanic students in a 2005 Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education article.
The grant, which comes from the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, was awarded to support projects that propose innovative efforts to expand graduate-level academic offerings at colleges that enroll a significant number of Hispanic American students.

SXU receives more than $240,000 in federal grant money to implement textbook rental program

SXU joins only one percent of U.S. colleges offering textbook rentals

Chicago (Oct. 12, 2009) Saint Xavier University has received a two-year $242,560 federal grant to implement a textbook rental program for several general education courses.

Students will be able to rent textbooks through the General Education Curriculum Textbook Rental Program beginning in the 2010 fall semester. The grant money will supply about 2,100 rental books for some of the most populated general education courses and will cover 100 percent of the program’s expenses.

Rental fees collected over the two-year grant period will be used to continue adding courses and textbooks to the rental program, with the goal of developing a comprehensive undergraduate textbook rental program within five years.

Only about one percent of United States colleges and universities offer textbook rental programs, according to the National Association of College Stores. Students typically need to purchase textbooks at the beginning of each semester, when their financial resources are most limited. The Illinois Board of Education noticed this may result in students choosing to postpone buying textbooks, which can limit their ability to succeed in their coursework.

The grant, which comes from the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, was awarded to support projects that propose innovative efforts to increase opportunities for students to rent college course materials. The grant is under the direction of Campus Book Store manager Janice McMahon.

SXU continues 2009-10 Film Series with “Red Balloon” and “The 400 Blows”

Second feature in “Children on Screen: Film and Childhood” series on Oct. 15

Chicago (Oct. 2, 2009) Saint Xavier University will screen Red Balloon and The 400 Blows as part of its 2009-10 film series, “Children on Screen: Film and Childhood” on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in McGuire Hall of the Warde Academic Center at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Red Balloon, a 1956 French short film directed by Albert Lamorisse, chronicles the adventures of a boy and his pet balloon as they explore the charming neighborhood of Belleville. Of the movie, Entertainment Weekly magazine film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote Red Balloon turns me into a kid again whenever I see it…[to] see the Red Balloon is to laugh, and cry, at the impossible joy of being a child again.”

Like Red Balloon, The 400 Blows follows the antics of a young boy as he skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals, gets caught and is eventually sent to a reform school. Directed by François Truffaut in 1959 and heralded by many to be the definitive film of the French New Wave, The 400 Blows combines the sophistication of art cinema with a poignant, exuberant coming-of-age story.

These films are the second feature in a six movie series where themes of childhood and film are explored. The next film in the series is the 1985 Swedish drama My Life as a Dog on Nov. 19.

Steven Murphy, Ed.D., Saint Xavier’s Vice President of University Advancement, will discuss “The Transformational Power of Education.” Murphy will narrate Saint Xavier University’s story through the personal experiences of several students and alumni to show how education has affected their lives, followed by a short question and answer session.

Murphy began his affiliation with Saint Xavier in 1975 and has served as vice president for enrollment and student services, vice president for student services, dean of students, and director of campus ministry. He was Dean of Students at Catholic Theological Union from 1982 to 1986. He is a graduate of Boston College, Andover Newton Theological School, Loyola University of Chicago and Northern Illinois University, where he earned his doctorate. He sits on the Smith Senior Living Board of Trustees and the Beverly Area Planning Association’s Council of Delegates.

The forum is named in honor of John T. Farrell Sr., a senior economic research analyst and deputy branch chief for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1952 to 1979. Farrell and his wife, Lucille, were facilitators at the Renaissance Academy, teaching a class called “Inside Washington” and a writing workshop. After his death in 1994, Lucille gave a contribution to fund the speaker’s bureau in his name.
