Chicago (Nov. 16, 2009)
Senior Sarah Rakauskas of Chicago received Saint Xavier University’s Lincoln Academy of Illinois 2009 Student Laureate Award, an annual award granted to outstanding seniors from each four-year, degree-granting institution of higher learning in Illinois. Rakauskas was presented with a Student Laureate Medallion and a certificate of achievement on Nov. 7 at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill.

Rakauskas was recognized for overall excellence in curricular and cocurricular involvement. She is an Honors student who will graduate with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in religious studies and sociology in spring, 2010. Upon graduation, she wishes to become a secondary theology teacher.

Rakauskas served as humanities chair of the Student Activities Board during her freshman year. She planned and facilitated a Service Day event for more than 200 students to assist several local agencies. In spring 2007, Rakauskas received the Cougar Spirit Award, honoring one new student who made the greatest cocurricular contribution to the campus. As a sophomore, Rakauskas became president of the Student Activities Board. Rakauskas has been greatly involved in Campus Ministry and served as, among other things, a peer minister for two retreat programs. Rakauskas is currently working on developing a senior retreat.

During two spring breaks, Rakauskas participated in service trips and traveled to Mississippi and New Orleans to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. For three summers, Rakauskas served as an orientation leader assisting new students and their parents make the adjustment to campus life. Rakauskas also served as a peer mentor for two years for Saint Xavier’s college life class “Transitions.” In 2008, Rakauskas received the Rookie Transitions Peer Mentor award. For the past two years, Rakauskas has also served as resident aAssistant in the Residence Halls and won the Rookie RA of the Year award for 2008-09. Most recently, Rakauskas began hosting her own show on WXAV 88.3FM, the campus radio station.

“I am honored and extremely excited to be named the Student Laureate for Saint Xavier University,” Rakuskas said. “Being a part of a lively campus like Saint Xavier has formed me into the woman I am today. I love being involved and am so appreciative of the formative years that I have spent here.”
