SXU’s Women of Distinction Choral Ensemble to perform Sacred Music for Women’s Voices

7:30 p.m. Fri., Nov. 13 at Chicago campus

Chicago (Oct. 28, 2009) Saint Xavier University’s Women of Distinction Choral Ensemble will perform Sacred Music for Women’s Voices at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 in the McDonough Chapel on the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The ensemble is composed of female singers, ranging from undergraduates to alumnae, and includes some of Saint Xavier’s finest musicians. The event is open to the public and general admission is $6. Admission for seniors and visiting students is $5 and free for all Saint Xavier students, faculty and staff with a valid ID.

The concert will begin with Mary Lynn Lightfoot’s Cantate Hodie, a high-energy work designed to engage the audience immediately. Next will be Gavriel Fauré’s Messe Basse, featuring vocal performance major Dorothy Hill as soloist. Audience members also will experience Valerie Shields L’dor Vador (From Generation to Generation) performed in Hebrew with recent vocal performance graduate Andrea Caruso as the mezzo-soprano soloist and Kurt Bestor’s evocative Prayer of the Children. The concert will feature a variety of inspirational songs as well, including two to close the program: Gwyneth Walker’s So Many Angels, and I Thank You God!.

Director of Vocal Studies Jan Bickel, D.M.A., will direct and conduct the ensemble. Adjunct faculty member Carolyn Brady Riley will serve as accompanist.
