Saint Xavier University unveils first university GreenBike Share Program of its kind on Earth Day

Students borrow bikes from computer kiosks to reduce carbon footprint

Chicago (April 20, 2009) Saint Xavier University unveils the first bike share program of its kind on an American university campus on Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, on the Smith-Morris quad at the Chicago Campus, 3700 W. 103rd St.

The GreenBike program allows students, staff and faculty to borrow bicycles made by the French company Veloway 24 hours a day, seven days a week from 14 computerized docking stations across Saint Xavier’s Chicago campus. The program is part of Saint Xavier’s ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality.

Saint Xavier is the first university in the nation to use bicycles provided by the French company Veloway, Europe’s premier bike share distributor. The shaft-drive, three speed bikes are maintained by Saint Xavier’s student-staffed Office of Sustainability.

GreenBikes are free to students, faculty and staff for the rest of the 2009 Spring and Summer semesters. Starting in the 2009 Fall semester, bicycles are free for the first 15 minutes and 60 cents for each additional 15 minutes.
